This annual observance is an opportunity to raise awareness of hearing and speech problems while encouraging people to learn more about early identification and prevention steps for hearing loss. Already the effects on adults are beginning to show with what a german neuroscientist termed as "digital dementia." What more during the impressionable ages of 1 to 5. Surely surely it can't be good and yet its so common to see children some on high chairs, some 5 year old swiping their tablets while daddy or mommy feeds them. It impairs speech, cripple social interactions and definitely shorten attention spans. Join Us in Raising Awareness for International Cleft Lip and Palate Week Did you know? Clefts are the second most common birth deformity, affecting approximately 1 in 700 births worldwide. However, awareness and understanding of clefts remain crucial for supporting those impacted. Interesting facts: ·      Air pollution from cooking over fire is among the risk factors for clefts. ·      Around two-thirds of cleft lips occur on the left-hand side. ·      Cleft lips are more common in boys, whereas cleft palates are more common in girls. ·      Unfortunately, 90% of children with cleft palates will experience at least one middle ear infection in their first year of life. How can Speech Therapists and Audiologists help?   Speech Therapists offer assistance by providing techniques to improve articulation and feeding difficulties. Audiologists provide hearing assessments and interventions for middle ear issues, along with support for hearing loss commonly associated with cleft palate.
