This is a testament to the high quality of our coffee and the dedication of all stakeholders involved in this journey. However, significant challenges remain that we must address to fully capitalize on this potential: Ownership and Profits: Many large coffee farms in Kenya are owned by foreign entities. This means a substantial portion of the profits from our premium coffee does not benefit local farmers and the Kenyan economy as it should. Aging Infrastructure: The coffee industry is hindered by outdated farming practices and infrastructure. There is a pressing need for investment in modern agricultural techniques and the rejuvenation of aging coffee trees to boost productivity and quality. Domestic Market Paradox: While we export high-quality coffee, the domestic market is saturated with lower-quality imports. Promoting local consumption and ensuring that Kenyans have access to our best coffee is crucial. Fair Trade Practices: Ensuring that farmers receive fair compensation for their produce is vital. Many smallholder farmers still struggle with low prices and limited access to international markets. Addressing these challenges will require concerted efforts from both the government and the private sector. By investing in local farmers, improving infrastructure, and promoting fair trade, we can enhance the sustainability and profitability of Kenya’s coffee industry.

I just came across a curious case. Europe is a tough market especially when it comes to foods and beverages (F&B) where tradition and local pride play a significant part. Certain things are next to impossible to find, like Heinz Chili Sauce in London and Cheerios in Barcelona. One of the world's leading F&B brands (let's call it UNO) domiciled in the US entered into a production and distribution deal with the largest brand within same category in Spain (let's call it DUO) a few years ago. What's UNO's strategy here? Years have passed and UNO's primary brand remains difficult to find in bars and stores. DUO has effectively blocked a major competitor from negatively impacting its market share. 😶 How can a global market leader make such a mistake against a brand nearly 700-times smaller by net worth? I suspect a major acquisition is in the pipelines. Price tag: Probably around $1.84 billion on a 10-year payback period.

Campari Group has agreed to buy historic French cognac house Courvoisier from Beam Suntory for €1.1 billion, in the largest deal on record for the Italian spirits group. Campari, who already owns Grand Marnier (a blend of cognac and orange liquor), announced that #cognac will become the fourth major pillar of the group, alongside #aperitifs, #bourbon and #tequila.
