I think this is an important paper that anyone who cares about our military and our nation should read. Some of my thoughts: 1. I completely agree with the Culture Shift of Mission Command and "disciplined disobedience." Easy to say - tough to do but we have to embrace it. 2. Agree on all points of technology and the need to operate routinely dispersed, disconnected, and in multi-domain including commercial. 3. The idea of a move towards partial conscription is interesting but I think unworkable. It is not the American Way of War to have a large standing Army and even when we had conscription it was short. Even FDR on the eve of Pearl Harbor would not have been able to get support for the draft and today there is no support. So what do we do? I would have liked to see an embracing of Coalition/Allies. America's super power is that we have friends and our threat does not.

Building the Defense Innovation Base! Developing master innovators takes time and discipline. Cleo and Johnny have both made the commitment and are passing on their lessons to others! Cleo is dedicated and driven. She loves a challenge! Say it can't be done, and watch her make miracles happen! Johnny is a powerful story-teller, narrative wizard, and leadership guru following the model laid out by Bob Quinn in the #FundamentalStateOfLeadership. His mastery of the Competing Values Framework for understanding organizational effectiveness is second to none!

🇺🇸 From the battlefield to the boardroom, these distinguished individuals are pursuing a new mission. Yesterday, I had the honor of discussing the U.S. military veteran’s journey from the military sector to the civilian sector with Joshua Galle, SHRM-SCP and Bill Reed, two veterans who've navigated these waters. Joshua is a former combat Marine and Bill a former Navy diver. I have provided a link to the discussion in the comment section. The occasional stigma surrounding veterans in the civilian workforce is unfortunate; and  unwarranted. 🌟 Veterans bring unparalleled qualities to the table – resilience, leadership, and a mission-focused mindset. Yet, misconceptions linger. The belief that veterans are too rigid or face potential challenges like PTSD overshadows their vast potential. This isn't just a loss for veterans; it's a missed opportunity for businesses. It's time we shift our perceptions and fully integrate these exceptional individuals into our corporate landscapes. 12 JULY 1862 – ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MEDAL OF HONOR : On 12 July 1862, while the nation was engaged in the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the measure that called for a U.S. Army Medal of Honor, to be awarded in the name of Congress, “to such noncommissioned officers and privates as shall most distinguish themselves by their gallantry in action, and other soldier-like qualities during the present insurrection.” Lincoln had approved a similar provision that created a U.S. Navy Medal of Valor, which provided the basis of the Army Medal of Honor created by Congress in July 1862. As noted, the Medal of Honor was originally intended to be an award to enlisted members, but in 1863, when the Medal of Honor became a permanent military decoration, it also became available to all members of the Armed Forces, including commissioned officers. The medal is reserved for recognizing those military personnel who have distinguished themselves by "conspicuous gallantry" in actual combat at the risk of life beyond the call of duty. Since its creation in 1862, more than 3,400 men and one woman of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard have received the Medal of Honor for heroic actions. The official name of the award is the Medal of Honor and is awarded by the president in the name of Congress. It is not "The Congressional Medal of Honor." The first U.S. Army recipients of the Medal of Honor were six members of a raiding party who penetrated deep into Confederate territory during the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862.

LTG Jensen, director of the Army National Guard and U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) #amsp alum, shares his thoughts on command and the role of the National Guard in today's Army. Kudos to a couple of our resident National Guardsmen Jesse Valles and Russ McKelvey for hosting a great #oparch show! A few thoughts that stuck with me: (1) Solve problems at your echelon. This means enabling the headquarters below you and understanding the mission of your higher headquarters to be at the right place, time and with the right capability to help them win. (2) Every component has a role (Active, Guard, Reserve). Be clear on expectations and invest the resources to ensure you get the right capabilities in the time you need them. (3) Mobilization - it's hard on paper, harder to imagine what it will be like in "real life". We won't know unless we rehearse. Though not a U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) text, this book contains useful insights. The Roman military took 14 years to adapt to the warfighting methods of an innovative and resourceful enemy. The successful (if unpopular) approaches of Fabius and Scipio Africanus compensated for much less effective leaders. Roman success was ultimately due to its ability to continually regenerate capability and its strategic and operational endurance. A key passage: "The factor which, in the end, defeated the invader was not the ability of Rome's generals, but the strength and vitality of her political institutions." How ready is our system, both internal and external to our Armed Forces, to sustain and prosecute a protracted, large scale conflict? The proportion of Female AIAN Veterans was higher than that of Female Veterans of other races (11.3% vs. 9.0%, respectively). - The AIAN Veteran cohort served in the Pre-9/11 period of service at a higher percentage than Veterans of other races (17.7% vs. 14.0%, respectively).
