What makes YOUR heart race? Takaharu, a Japanese business professional who is one of my trainees, recently shared a graph below with the rest of the team I was training. The graph - compiled by data from his smart watch - showed his heart rate from the same day in the previous week. A day where he did 2 challenging things. Let's go backwards in time. The second peak in his heart rate was from visiting the gym. The first peak in his heart rate was from attending my training. I was so happy🤣 I want the Japanese professionals that I work with - in the area of English communication - to FEEL challenged. I want them to feel that pressure that comes from the ‘chaos' of an English discussion. That said, they KNOW I am there for them. To guide them.  To support them.  To encourage them. They know they are in place where their COURAGE is ENCOURAGED and REWARDED. (TheJapanSeries 122) Why the challenge? I know their real meetings are so much tougher than my training. If Takaharu’s heart rate peaks in my training, imagine how he'lll feel in a meeting with 15 colleagues from around the world, some who don’t always make concessions for him. My job is to prepare him and his colleagues for the 'English onslaught' If I could give him a lightsaber I would. Until then he gets a dose of... ... the right skills ... the right mindset ... the right opportunities May the the force be with you Takaharu 😉 #TheJapanSeries #TheCourageousCommunicator

Wow. This is so telling. Extending the sports analogy further, the reason you push yourself hard in training is to make it easier for you to perform to your full potential on game day. Question is - will you turn this into a scientific study and collect heart rate date from more trainees to create a statistical cohort? It would be fascinating to measure heart rate in ‘English’ meetings before your program and then after to see if their ‘foreign-language fitness’ improves. I think there may be a book in that…or at least an article 🤫

No pain, no gain. If you're going to go through the pain, who better than to do it with the one and only Jeff O'Dea. My question is this: How on earth did he have the energy to hit the gym after a session with you? Respect, Mr Takaharu.

I always have my Apple watch on and it's amazing to see what makes MY heart rate increase 😇 On a serious note preparing your students for the English meeting onslaught is a great way of preparing them for what they have to come!

I'm an engineer, so I love quantitative analysis. Using changes in heart rate as a topic for discussion is a great idea.

Great that you're challenging your trainees and forcing them out of their comfort zones. Not only is this a sign of growth and development but also great practice for the real thing. Great work Jeff O'Dea

Haha poor Takaharu. But I think of it like this, your intense bootcamp training Jeff O'Dea, is probably the most real training he can get to prepare and build his skills, courage and mindset ready for real meetings.
