LP’s want to know what’s going on, and they deserve to know, they are helping fund the deal! Here are the Pro’s and Con’s 👇🏼 Con’s - You open yourself up to a lot of criticism, which can spread. - Making mistakes and hitting roadblocks publicly.. which usually goes unseen and not an issue. - LP’s, for the most part, are investing with others as they don’t want to be the GP who endures all the risk, stress, emotions, etc. Being overly transparent allows them the option to get that experience if they want. Which can often be a bad thing. Pro’s - No one can say anything untrue about you, and it have credibility, if it’s all out there. - Build an extreme amount of trust with your investors Investors feel a heightened sense of ownership to the deal/your syndication. - When things go well, investors feel a heightened sense of achievement. - Allows those who have not yet invested, to get radically familiar with you and your deal before ever having spoken to you. Getting pitched on day 1 is the worst kind of relationship starter, in my experience. - THE BIG ONE… You begin to build actual relationships with your investors, far beyond what you would sending a quarterly email. The list is endless, so I wanted to throw it back to you. How do you do “transparency” and what are the pros/cons in your experience?

Sounds weird, right? Guess what - you probably do it yourself when you think about branding. "Raising assets is all down to performance" BUT You probably know that cannot be true. Because, If it were (capacity aside): - The best-performing funds would have the most assets We all KNOW they don't - The funds with the most assets would be the best performers We all KNOW they aren't Also... Why do fund salespeople tend to be above averagely attractive? What could be the advantage if it's just about the numbers? See? You want to believe it's all about the numbers, because you are good at understanding numbers. But the reality is VERY different... Now you can understand this from the LP's perspective. 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗔 𝗕𝗟𝗜𝗭𝗭𝗔𝗥𝗗, 𝗔 𝗕𝗢𝗫 𝗢𝗙 𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗠 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝟴 𝗛𝗨𝗡𝗚𝗥𝗬 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗧𝗔𝗨𝗚𝗛𝗧 𝗠𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗔𝗡 𝗨𝗡𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗖𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 I was walking through the windy streets of Chicago carrying 10 Ghirardelli milkshakes...and it was 10 degrees below freezing. Middle of January. Snow on the ground. And I was wearing a suit and tie. The reason? I was on my way to visit a big hedge fund client for a business meeting. Now there is one truism of any client visit. No matter HOW much money your customer makes....they ALWAYS love premium food. My client's office was near the Ghirardelli Ice Cream shop on North Michigan Ave. So I figured what the heck. The young kid behind the ice cream counter was shivering when I ordered. He he asked me TWICE if I REALLY wanted a milkshake, when it was 22 degrees and blowing outside. He winced when I told him I wanted 10 of them. He stared at me angrily while unwrapping the plastic cover from the immaculate, unused mixing machine. The whole time, he tried to dissuade me by explaining these Quake Shakes were $10 bucks each. I told him the C-note be damned....pile it all in a box that I could carry. That kid definitely has a worn out voodoo doll of me somewhere still. But 30 minutes later, I walked out carrying 18,000 calories of liquid ice cream. 5 Chocolates...5 Vanillas. When I met the 8 traders on their trading desk, they burst out laughing. Then the fat bastards proceeded to polish off all 10 of them during the meeting. To this day, neither they nor I can recall the specifics of what business we discussed. But we ALL tell that story still. And that is my point. Relationship building is about creating a S T O R Y! What can YOU do for your customer that would create a re-tellable tale for THEM? I'm talking something they would share with friends OUTSIDE of work. Just for the smiles. Start stacking those for yourself. Because those smiles are gasoline for your business.
