Quote: "“These two asset classes in commercial real estate are often confused with one another,” says Avison Young Principal and Managing Director Nick Banks. “They have some similarities, but they’re quite different.” For example, they are both ultimately about medical care, although at different locations in the process. Life science is R&D and product development. Industrial design is the aesthetically pleasing creation of an object intended for mass production. At least by definition. In fact, it’s a lot more than that. Companies use the design of their products to gain a competitive economic advantage. It might come as a shock that damages to design rights result in hundreds of billions of losses globally. 🧑🎓 Our #PhD alumni Dr. Michael Papenhagen, LL.M. successfully defended his #dissertation on the topic of "Organization and management of industrial design rights”. By doing a qualitative literature review, Dr. Papenhagen set himself the task to: ✔️ track the historical development of registered design rights ✔️ highlight the strengths and weaknesses of modern EU design law ✔️ summarize the rights and protective measures of intellectual property holders. Some of the key takeaways from his work are: 💡 Legal provision of design law is not fully adapted to the digital age. 💡 The legislature should enforce rules and procedures that maintain a balance between design protection and freedom of design. 💡 All EU member states must accept the requirements of the Hague system. 💡 European and worldwide design laws must be better coordinated. The ethos is well-represented by the institution, evident through the Amalia Children’s Hospital, which provides children and their families with a home-like environment in the hospital context, and the High-Level Isolation Unit, designed to be highly functioning in treating infectious diseases but focused on the wellbeing of its patients. The design of the campus’ main building further embodies this, promoting holistic, human-centric and sustainable care for patients. Focusing on workflows for staff not only helps to improve the efficiency of the care process but also improves the patient experience. Hospitals are seldom relaxing environments – quite usually the contrary – but Radboudumc uses biophilic design principles to promote usually absent respite.
