In today's world, staying up-to-date with new technologies, especially artificial intelligence, is crucial. That's why I participated in a workshop organized by the Lebanese University Faculty of Law and Political and Administrative Sciences on the fundamentals of AI in legal practice. This was the first session in a series about AI and law that the faculty is planning to organize. Lawyers have carefully thought through the ramifications of artificial intelligence (AI) for intellectual property (IP). Economists haven’t as much. That’s a pity because AI is profoundly affecting the economic incentives posed by the IP system. How IP laws treat AI-based/assisted/generated inventions and creative works will have lasting implications for innovation and creative expression. The publication of these documents is an important milestone in the AI policy journey in Africa. However, further work needs to be done both at the AU level as well as in the various African countries to enhance a coherent and collaborative approach to AI policy and regulatory initiatives, which can further guide the responsible development and use of AI in Africa.  International collaboration is necessary to inform the policy making processes and to ensure that there is proper consideration of the valuable work done elsewhere, e.g. UNESCO.
