PART TWO There are no major disruptions from kids or parents, no social agendas, and no state-mandated BS (we live in California) taught here. The owners ran this school like a business, and I appreciated their no-nonsense approach. This gets us to High School. We have a couple of nationally ranked private High Schools near us. The K-8 school was a feeder to these schools, and by then, the company I had started to pay these bills was doing well enough to continue rolling into the next stage of private school. Add $85K per kid to the receipt box. It was an amazing experience for both kids. My daughter found her calling at the all-girls school (she loved it), and my son played sports and learned about team success, accountability, and the hard losses he had to power through. Time for college! This is the big one. $439K in total costs. Worth it? Absolutely – both my kids are ambitious, happy, both street-smart and book-smart, and they are building their amazing lives as I type these words. So how did we pay for it? When we needed that extra $1K per month for our first kid, I told my wife she needed to help me start another business to generate that revenue. We spent 10 PM to Midnight every single day building a web-based business that started off slow but, after 2 years, began paying the bills. Things we don’t say to our kids about money: ❌“We can’t afford it.” ❌“We don’t have the money.” ❌“It’s too expensive.” Here’s why👇🏾 Money is not finite. It can always be created and attracted depending on your skills and belief/certainty. Price or something being “expensive” is relative. I refuse to pass on the scarcity and lack programming about money, that I grew up with, which conditioned me to believe that: 👉🏾There was never enough money. 👉🏾You never knew when you would get more so better hold onto it and hoard it. (Generosity was non-existent.) 👉🏾You never get to buy what you truly want because you will never have enough money for it. And so many other fun ways to view money (catch the sarcasm?) Listen, I used to walk in the store, fill the basket up with things I needed and find a reason to put them all back. I wore being “frugal” (CHEAP) as a badge of honor. I felt guilty when I did spend money on myself like I was doing something wrong. I thought I was so “good” with money, when really I was just fearful of “losing” it. It’s taken years and tens of thousands of dollars in coaching and mindset work to uproot this deeply ingrained belief system. It had to be done. Because you’re not going to succeed as an entrepreneur if you have a scarcity mindset and are scared of money and sales. So instead of giving my children a negative view of money, we respond: 👉🏾”Thank you for letting me know what you want. I’ll let you know when we are looking to buy some new toys.” 👉🏾”Me and Dad aren’t planning to spend any money on that right now. But when we are, I’ve made a note and we will talk about it then.” 👉🏾”Hmmm that’s not going to happen right now, what about XYZ (alternative)? It’s not just these responses though, it is the entire way we raise them. Step 1 is being aware of your own invisible beliefs and programming so that you can decide what is working for you and what’s not.
