Submit your abstract to the #CMD31 Mini Colloquium MC46 - Charge and spin transport in low-symmetry, topological and magnetic materials

8th International Conference on Material Modelling ICMM8 in London, UK on 15-17 July 2024. This biennial conference is the eighth in the ICMM series. The first ICMM took place in Dortmund 2009 (Germany). The conference since then was held in Paris (France), Warsaw (Poland), Berkeley (USA), Rome (Italy), Lund (Sweden) and Cape Town (South Africa).   The deadline for the abstracts is 15 February 2024.   The peer-reviewed papers presented at this Conference will be published in a Special Issue of the Open Access journal Technische Mechanik. A selection of papers presented at ICMM8 will also be published in a Special Issue of European Journal of Mechanics - A/Solids  (Elsevier) after the event.   The aim of this Conference is to bring together researchers from various fields of material modelling and material characterization and to cover all aspects of material modelling. It will provide the opportunity for interaction with and exchanges between scientists working in different subareas of mechanics of materials. CMIS The 11th Contact Mechanics International Symposium (CMIS) aims at gathering researchers interested in a broad range of topics in theoretical, mathematical, computational and experimental aspects of contact mechanics. The symposium addresses a wide panorama of topics in the area of contact mechanics in order to reinforce interactions and collaborations between the various communities: Models, friction laws; wear; tribological modeling; cohesive zone models; rolling; Emerging computational approaches: methods, algorithms and numerical analysis; Mathematical analysis; Dynamic contact problems, instabilities; Nano and micromechanics of contact and multiscale approaches; Multiphysics and thermomechanical coupling; Granular materials and rigid bodies; Contact modeling in mechanical and civil engineering, biomechanics and geomechanics; Architected/textured contact interfaces Experiments in contact mechanics The locations of CMIS have always been selected with the idea of providing a quiet and private environment to encourage scientific discussions among the participants. 💥The #ELI collaboration with the University of Maryland, carried forward by our scientist Carlo Maria Lazzarini, generated an original result recently published on #OpticsLetters. ➡️ During his visiting research time, possibly thanks to a mobility grant from the FZU - Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Carlo Maria joined the research team led by Prof. Milchberg, working on the pulse shaping of ultrafast kHz laser pulses, together with Lucas Railing (principal investigator) and Manh Le. ➡️ The work demonstrates the loss-free generation of 3 mJ, few-cycle (5 fs) double pulses at 1 kHz repetition rate, with a pulse peak separation from 100 fs down to 10 fs, using a helium-filled hollow core fiber (HCF) and chirped mirror compressor. The innovative technique is based on modifications to the spectral phase and amplitude of the oscillator seed pulse and on the tunable nonlinear pulse splitting in the HCF compressor. ➡️ This result can be beneficial for Laser Wakefield Acceleration, a topic on which the collaboration is still actively running, but also for the broader pulse shaping and ultrafast optical communication research communities. During this captivating journey, I learned how medical doctors, biologists, and physicists collaborate to advance healthcare and imaging technologies. From using particle accelerators for cancer treatment to sophisticated particle detectors enabling early disease diagnosis, the intersection of physics and medicine continues to drive progress. Exciting developments, including machine learning and artificial intelligence, are shaping the future of healthcare. 🌟🔬👩⚕️🚀

Here is where cutting-edge usages of data science is explored, implemented and turned into usable achievements:

It was an absolute highlight to provide the theory for this impressive experiment. We used a multi-physics approach to model each step of the experiment from real-time TDDFT to surface hopping and coupled-cluster theory. We extract not just spectral data about geometry changes and electronic character, but also resolve the creation and dephasing of electronic and nuclear quantum beats – the inherent characteristics of coherent superpositions of molecular eigenstates.
