This course addresses the evaluation of the effectiveness of programs and policies. Did you ever go on a fun one-day car outing together with senior researchers, students and postdocs all working in your area of research? Scientists working in the tri-state area (Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana) will be embarking on one such outing this Spring to participate in CinciNNI. They will be taking a few hour ride to drive to Cincinnati from several different universities in the area. Prof. Carlos Bolech and I co-founded CinciNNI: tri-state quantum condensed matter theory forum in 2010 to form a community of researchers in the states of Oh, KY and IN. It creates a larger supportive network also for students and postdocs. For every CinciNNI gathering we have a theme in which we dive deep into. CinciNNI stands for Cincinnati Near Neighbor Interactions. The inspiration for the name also comes from 1. cincinnus [plural cincinni]  which is a type of inflorescence (that also inspired the logo for CinciNNI) 2. Cincinnatus, a Roman leader (~500 BCE) who became a legendary figure of Roman virtue because he relinquished power after a needed military intervention and went back to being a farmer. The universities that participate in CinciNNI are University of Cincinnati, The Ohio State University, Ohio University, University of Kentucky, Indiana University IndianapolisI, Indiana University Bloomington, Purdue University. We are hoping that Kent State University, Case Western Reserve University and some other universities will join too! Fun rituals around PhD defense at your university? We have a newly-minted PhD this morning, Dr. Tobias Blay of the University of Göttingen. I could not accept the invitation to be in Göttingen in person for his defense and joined via Zoom. However, I was given a detailed description of the ritualistic celebration that traditionally follows a Ph.D. defense at Göttingen. The ritual is quite elaborate, and I didn't quite memorize all the details, but it involves hauling the new PhD in a cart across the campus, by the youngest person in their PhD program, to some statue. The new PhD then kisses the statue. There was also something about a crown, fountain, downtown, and beer -- and it sounded like a LOT OF FUN. (I hope they didn't make it up to make me feel sorry for not coming in person :) ). QUESTION 1: Does your university have any special traditions and rituals around graduation celebrations? QUESTION 2: How do such traditions arise? Can they be proactively instituted, or do they have to be spontaneous?

In the 20th century, two World Wars and a Great Depression fractured world order, tearing apart the orderly functioning of statecraft. Power cycle theory is an understanding of world order that explores the changing structure of the great power system across long periods of history and explains how that changing structure has precipitated major wars historically. Doran's discussion, “Changing Relative Power and the Probability of Major War,” will examine the answers to some of the challenges to power cycle theory that have ended up reinforcing the theory, and the reliability and validity of its empirical results.
