AirX Charter is a dedicated #charter operator, of only five or so such companies in the entire industry. But what makes it stand out even further is the fact that AirX owns its own #fleet. This deceptively simple difference has an impact across AirX’s entire business model. It affects the responsibilities, the risks, and the opportunities it can take as a company. “The full financial risk of the operation sits with us,” says John Matthews, Chairman and Founder of AirX. This is not just any fleet, however. Matthews boasts it is “probably the most diverse fleet in the entire history of #aviation”, from #privatejets to VIP #airliners. But even this is not the element that most distinguishes AirX in the charter operating field. “We are profitable, and that alone puts us among only 1 or 2% of the sector,” Matthews says. “We are in control of our own assets. We are not in #aircraft management in any big way. We target preowned aircraft while rolling out new interiors across the fleet to create a price-competitive yet profitable business model. Chance Fowler, Aquila Air Capital's VP of Portfolio Management, joined the panelists of Aviation Week Network’s Engine Leasing, Trading & Finance Americas (ELTF) conference in Miami to discuss the challenges facing OEMs as they struggle to produce enough engines to meet demand, while market participants are grappling with increased prices for new engines and rising maintenance costs for the older engines that must stay in service. #aviationweek #industrytalk #ELTFUSA #engineleasing #aeamericas Fowler said a major challenge his private equity firm faces today is the uncertainty around shop visit turnaround times. “If something is going to take longer [and the length of time is known] and it costs more, that’s fine, we can underwrite that, but if you have a shop visit that’s supposed to take six months that ends up taking over year a year, it’s hard for us to explain to our shareholders" why such an investment should be made. 

Privately owned VistaJet grew at breakneck speed after 2019 to become the world’s second-largest flier of private jets. But, through complex financial engineering involving its founder and owner, Swiss entrepreneur Thomas Flohr—who briefly showed up in the Forbes billionaires list in 2018—it also accumulated big debts that could prove unsustainable. Investors are getting increasingly worried: A VistaJet bond issued last May closed Friday at a 17.23% yield, the highest on record. Its spreads relative to Treasury yield are well into distressed territory. This could be an underappreciated risk for Canada’s publicly-listed Bombardier, its key plane supplier, and the whole market for secondhand private jets.

Factors such as the rise in private travel during the pandemic, global economic conditions, faster acquisition times and limited availability of new jets are driving growth in the pre-owned business jet market.
