Scientists and researchers are coming up with great cures to many diseases and improving the quality of life for patients with many other diseases. FDA approved the first gene therapies for sickle cell disease today! But as a system we are doing a disservice to their achievements by delivering a poor patient experience. What is the point of a great medicine if 70% of the "eligible" (covered by insurance!) patients do not get access to that drug? Portals and apps do not narrow the gap. Digital conversations that support a patient's journey with education about the medicine, that help navigate the financial and insurance aspects, that provides nurse support, that provides status updates from the specialty pharmacies and conversations that support continued adherence, closes the gap! Conversational AI solutions that are integrated with underlying systems of record, that can deliver well designed conversations, that pass regulatory and compliance checks and systems that are optimized on an ongoing basis based on the data collected from these conversations can close the gap! "How will AI be used in pharmaceutical drug discovery and clinical development?" It's a question I hear a lot. I do believe AI is going to have a massive positive impact on our industry, eventually. But unfortunately, the "Discover A New Drug" button is still very far away. Rather, I think AI in the near-term will help decrease the costs and time associated with the hundreds of small daily tasks organizations do to execute a clinical trial. In a typical clinical study, there are lots of meetings scheduled, emails sent, documents created, listings generated, and data cleaned for analysis. I've mentioned a few ideas on where I think AI might help in previous posts. Basically, all the "small stuff" adds up. If we could reduce the seemingly inconsequential tasks that collectively demand a substantial amount of people's time by 90%, then the overall cost savings over the course of a clinical study would be immense. And to make that happen, we will probably not need to use AI trained on a model with a gazillion parameters. Microsoft made big step in September with the open-source release of Phi1.5. Theoretically the model will be less expensive to train and run because it's small. It benchmarks well and that seems like a win-win.
