Made in Victoria – Energy Technologies Manufacturing Program - Now Open The Victorian Government has unveiled the Made in Victoria – Energy Technologies Manufacturing program, designed to spur local manufacturers into the heart of renewable energy evolution. The program, heralded by Minister for Jobs and Industry, Natalie Hutchins MP, aims to equip manufacturers with the tools, skills, and technologies necessary to harness the vast opportunities the renewable energy sector offers. With grants ranging from $100,000 to $750,000, businesses are given support to expand their operations in creating components vital for the zero emissions and renewable energy infrastructures, including wind, hydrogen, and solar. The program is open to manufacturers with an existing presence in Victoria who require support to increase their capability to manufacture products or components for local and global supply chains contributing to net zero and low emissions technologies. Eligible manufacturing capabilities include but are not limited to automation, additive manufacturing, advanced materials design, robotics, and engineering. The Queensland Government has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to position the state at the forefront of #quantum and advanced technologies manufacturing, introducing five competitive #grant programs totalling over $50 million. This initiative is part of a broader vision to establish Queensland as ‘The Quantum State’, supported by an $83.7 million investment over five years outlined in the 2024-25 Budget. While attending the National Conference on Microgrids in Boston I’m inspired to share a Case Study on a microgrid solution Centrica delivered for a life science company. The challenge was to achieve consumption/cost reduction, greater resiliency and accelerate decarbonization. The solution was a 1.6 MW solar array and a 5MW/10MWh battery storage system using a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery, which is cobalt-free and aligns with the customer’s sustainability practices. The battery storage system meets 100% of the facility’s peak power needs for two hours and can operate up to several hours more depending on the load of the facility. The advanced microgrid has a seamless rapid mode dynamic switching system between on-off grid operation and can be integrated with other generation assets. The team developed a solution that delivers transfer of power from grid to battery in 24 milliseconds, five times faster than utility system control standards, resulting in consistent voltage to maintain operations. Original payback was seven years. Yet, because the system was so efficient they were able to net meter power back to the grid that accelerated their ROI to just 12 months. "While exacerbated oversupply conditions will further tighten profits, there are still some opportunities available for an agile, integrated manufacturer. The current limited profit margins for module-only manufacturers means there is no room for further decreases, which gives an advantage to manufacturers that are vertically integrated. Some module-only manufacturers will be forced to take orders at a loss, reduce capacity or even shut down."
