#OTD in 1948, President Truman issued Executive Order 9981, desegregating United States Armed Forces. This executive order was part of a broader effort to expand civil rights to all Americans without regard to race, color, religion or national origin. In the decades since desegregation, African Americans have continued to serve with distinction and have held the highest military positions in our Armed Forces, including Unified Combatant Commands and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. That tradition continues today with General (retired) Austin serving as the first African American Secretary of Defense. Our Armed Forces is a more capable, stronger force that stands ready to deter adversaries, reassure allies, and fight and win wars as a result of implementing EO 9981. The fight for civil rights continues. The definition has been expanded in recent years to safeguard equal rights and equal opportunities for all with regard to race, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation.
