By Jerry Jordan, Editor DARLINGTON, S.C. – Gambling used to be taboo in auto racing but with NASCAR now having sponsorship arrangements with multiple big-name sportsbooks and even though it’s something added to the fan experience many drivers don’t care what the oddsmakers think about their chances. “Who makes the odds,” asked Chris Buescher, the three-time winner was told he is 16-to-1. “Experts in Vegas? That sentence doesn’t even make sense to me. So, expert gamblers? Who are these experts? No, no, it doesn’t matter. The gambling side of our sport has been a lot of fun for a lot of people. “I can’t tell you how many people will come up to me at the racetrack and probably this week, too, and say, ‘Yeah, you made me fifty bucks’ or ‘thank you, you made me three grand here.’ That’s awesome. I am happy for you but I have no clue how that happened. Good for you. Proud to do it but it doesn’t matter. We measure internally what we are doing, what we car capable of, what we need to improve on. We know all these things and no expert oddsmaker living in Las Vegas is going to change how we approach our races.” Since NASCAR drivers are forbidden from betting on themselves, or anything involved in motorsports, that may play into their answers about what the oddsmakers think of winning the Cup Series championship. The US viewership figures are in from a bumper weekend of motorsport action: 📈 Formula 1 - Monaco GP, 1.96 million viewers (ABC) Benefitted from commercial coverage as a record audience watched Charles Leclerc's first home win, a 10 per cent increase on last year's figure. 📉 NASCAR - Coca-Cola 600, 3.1 million viewers (Fox) Struggled up against the Indy 500 after rain wrecked both series' schedules, represents the lowest audience in the race's 23-year history on Fox. 📈 INDYCAR - Indy 500, 5.02 million viewers (NBC) Despite a near four-hour rain delay, the Indy 500 broke five million viewers for just the fourth time since 2017. There is only one sport that I follow religiously, and that is F1. I know many people might not consider it a sport in the traditional sense, but trust me, once you understand what the drivers, teams, engineers, and authorities go through, it becomes one of the most interesting sports both on and off the screen. 🏎️ Have you heard of the term 'Silly Season'? The Silly Season in F1 typically kicks off around the mid-season break, during which rumours and speculation abound, mostly concerning which drivers are switching teams. In 2024, the Silly Season has already begun even before the official season has commenced, thanks to several news pieces making the rounds: • The biggest news undoubtedly is that Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, is leaving Mercedes to join Ferrari. I still can't imagine using 'Lewis' and 'Ferrari' in the same sentence. Lewis has won six out of his seven championships at Mercedes, so this is quite significant news. The rumour mill suggests that the deal is worth $100 million per year, with investments in Lewis' Mission44 and other charitable foundations. I don't think this is possible, and I truly believe the contract is not worth more than $50 million a year, as Max, who is signed to Red Bull until 2028, has a contract worth $55 million per year, which is quite a long-term contract compared to the one Lewis has signed. 💵 • Andretti, a powerhouse in American motorsports with teams competing in the IndyCar Series, Indy NXT, Formula E, Extreme E, and joint entries in IMSA and the Australian Supercars Championship, had their bid to enter the sport rejected by Formula 1 for the next two years. F1 conducted an analysis involving key stakeholders and concluded that an 11th team "would not on its own add value" and "did not believe the applicant would be a competitive participant." In recent years, F1 has added two more US races, with plans for more in the future, but has failed to add more US teams, which, frankly, doesn't make sense to me. 🤔 • Allegations involving Christian Horner, on which I would only comment further after the hearing scheduled by Red Bull today. The media is having its own Silly Season with this particular news story. ❌ • 13 out of 20 driver contracts are set to expire by the end of 2024, making this entire year into a Silly Season to look out for. It's going to be mayhem somewhere during the mid-mark of this season. 📈 All in all, Formula 1 remains the most interesting sport in my opinion, and I am excited for the new season starting on February 21st with testing and the first race weekend beginning on February 29th, 2024.
