Unlocking Influencer Marketing for Brands @ Ubiquitous // Cofounder & CEO

ICYMI: Instagram is testing un-skippable ads you can’t scroll past. 🤳 This is the antithesis of great advertising. The best ads are delightful and magnetic but most importantly, they preserve people's dignity. A person could be doing anything but they *chose* to watch *this* ad. Instagram's update robs people of their dignity. And people are (understandably) pissed. 51% said they’d delete Instagram if this was the new normal (PR Week). "But Jess – people will now have to watch my ads. That's great!" From one advertiser to another: This view will backfire spectacularly. Why? Because it fundamentally distorts the implicit agreement between advertisers and consumers: "You give me your attention if, and only if, I give you something worth paying attention to." Don't spend your advertising dollars on forcing people to sit through your stuff. Invest in creating content that's so good people don't even realize it’s an ad. In other words: Don’t coerce. Captivate. What's your POV on Instagram's unskippable ads?

I agree with your take here Jess Flack admittedly I'm new to the marketing field but my first question is: how will you know if your ad worked if people are forced to watch it? I guess there will be some who might be converted even if they initially didn't want to watch the ad but...for me personally, I'd be annoyed lol 😂

It’s never a good to have your audience feel trapped or caged, Jess Flack. Whether it’s the Washington Post, which covers their own content with inescapable pitches to subscribe or upgrade, or pesky Google ads that follow your scrolling until they literally fall off the top of your screen. That leaves us with one refuge: the little red ❌ in the upper right corner. That, or the 📴 button. My faves.

Absolute backfire waiting to happen...it'll create resentment and disengagement from the platform.

😂another reason to drive people off instagram. Next you’ll have to wait in a queue to pay to be verified! Oh wait….

The lack of competition in social media means they can do this. It's crazy that we have IG, FB, TikTok... then Pinterest (Twitter is no longer viable) and that's it. They command so much power and millions of consumers are spending the majority of their time on these platforms. (YouTube as well) 51% will not delete IG. That number is way high. As targeting options become more limited because of privacy laws, the platforms have to find ways to drive performance for brands and this is one tactic.

It would degrade the users and the platform even more.
