I am honored to co-author an article with Tricia Carey about Renewcell, the defunct clothing recycler, published today in the Stanford Social Innovation Review. In our article, we discuss Renewcell’s origins, its efforts to succeed, and the challenges it faced, ultimately leading to its rough landing and bankruptcy. The Renewcell story is one of grit and resolve but also of intractable odds when brands fail to meet public commitments. However, the Renewcell story is not about assigning blame; instead, it is about understanding what happened and learning from that experience. Innovation comes with costs and risks. Brands need to accept this reality. Environmental innovators must also recognize that parachuting ideas onto brands without ensuring the products work, are ready for the market, or make a compelling business case is impractical. The apparel industry should learn from the Renewcell experience. There is a growing tension in our industry between those who want to address its shortcomings and those who feel compelled to change only when necessary, often fearing government regulations. There is much to consider. Embracing Tradition and Innovation: The Leather Industry’s Sustainable Journey 🌿 As the global conversation around sustainability intensifies, it’s crucial to shed light on industries that have been making substantial strides in environmental responsibility. One such industry is leather production. Historically, leather has been an integral part of human civilization, lauded for its durability, versatility, and timeless appeal. Today, the leather industry stands at a crossroads of tradition and innovation. Recent advancements have transformed tanneries into models of sustainability. Modern tanneries are not just workplaces; they are a testament to how traditional industries can adapt and thrive in an environmentally conscious world. These facilities are cleaner and greener than ever, with state-of-the-art technology ensuring minimal environmental impact. It’s also essential to address the rise of alternative materials, like grape-based products. While innovation in materials is welcome, it’s crucial to maintain transparency in environmental claims and product labeling. Terms like “leather” have specific connotations and should be used accurately to avoid consumer confusion. Furthermore, the leather industry’s efforts in improving practices—like waste reduction, water treatment, and energy efficiency—highlight a commitment to environmental stewardship that’s often overlooked in mainstream narratives. As we move forward, let’s recognize and support industries that are making real changes for a sustainable future. The leather industry’s journey is a prime example of balancing heritage with progress, proving that sustainability and tradition can coexist harmoniously. #LeatherIndustry #Sustainability #Innovation #EnvironmentalResponsibility

Are sustainable practices the future? We certainly believe so. At La Trama Srl, we embrace sustainable practices as a core value, advocating for its integration not only among the younger generations but also within established companies rooted in eras where profitability and capitalism often overshadowed broader social and environmental responsibilities. Fashion transcends mere clothing; it is the most powerful art form, blending movement, design, and architecture into every piece. From our inception, sustainability has been woven into our identity. But how? → Our showroom, adorned with decor made from recycled cardboard, embodies our commitment to eco-friendly practices without compromising on style. → Through innovative machinery, we minimize resource consumption and manage waste responsibly. For example, our hydrocarbon-based dry cleaning ensures garments are cleaned gently and sustainably, leaving a minimal environmental footprint. → Water used in our processes is sourced from a rainwater collection cistern, symbolizing our dedication to circular resource use. Sustainability isn't just a trend—it's a corporate social responsibility that should drive every decision we make. Join us in reimagining fashion as a force for positive change. Let's work for a future where style meets sustainability seamlessly. #FashionRevolution #SustainableFashion #LaTramaSrl #EthicalFashion #CircularEconomy #Innovation #Seamless

“Consider the experience of buying a pair of jeans. You find the pair you like and after the purchase, your connection with that company is over. You wear them, throw them away, and buy your next pair from someone else. There’s no loyalty – and a lot of waste... But imagine if those jeans came with a maintenance package... The experience would be made more valuable for the consumer meaning they’d be happy to pay more, buy more from the same brand, and advocate the products to their peers... Extending the experience and offering more value is a good investment for a business. Sustainability and profitability can coexist.” Read the rest of Le'Anne Whiteford's post on our blog 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ezDaDRE2 #sustainability #design #CustomerExperience
When a factory in West Wales making 35,000 jeans a week, employing 400 people in a town of only 4,000 closes its door, you would think that was the end of the story. The fact is, it's now producing jeans again and the town is once again a maker town. It's not how the story usually goes. I love the tale of Hiut Denim Co and was privileged to get a tour of the factory from David Hieatt, the man who helped breathe life back into the town (as well as establish The DO Lectures, which I was attending at the time). Details matter here and a lot of love goes into each pair - they focus on 'doing one thing well' and employ 'Grand Masters' not factory workers. The book of repairs (see pic) is a testament to their commitment to producing a product for life, which is also not how the story usually goes these days. It's a little bit of Patagonia in Wales (I know there's also a little bit of Wales in Patagonia, the Welsh travel well!) What if we could create the conditions for the maker, small-scale production culture to thrive, reducing our distance from the things we consume? It feels like a win for local communities and for the environment. People, society, planet. What if the future of UK industry wasn't just focussed on attracting investment from global corporations, on digital and the AI revolution? This should be part of our thinking. I wonder how many other towns have ex 'Grand Masters' of 'something' working in the coffee shops, care homes and out-of-town warehouses? Let me know if you know.
