Excited to Embrace Docker for a Smoother Dev Workflow (and Better User Experience!) My team is getting ready to embark on a journey that is going to improve our development experience, ultimately leading to a better user experience for our customers. Anyone you talk to on my team, they will tell you how excited I am about where we are headed. In my opinion, this change is going to allow us to increase development speed by reducing build times, reducing the change surface and better visibility into how our users are using our application. I have been using Docker for side projects for at least the last year. The development experience with VS Code + Docker + Docker Compose has been amazing. I have been sharing my experience with using Docker with my teammates. I have been going through tutorials, reading articles on how best to leverage docker for development and exploring usage of Docker on my side projects. A while ago I came across a few articles about DevContainers. I started to dig into DevContainers. What they are, how to use them and many other questions. The desire to learn more about DevContainers took on a sense of urgency because I was curious if we could leverage them at work. I had already had a plan that I was going to propose to the team. Using a Multi-root workspace in VS Code + Docker Compose, we could spin up our entire stack if need be, or spin up the pieces you need for current work. I feel like I am missing something about DevContainers. I am hoping someone can set me straight. From what I have read/learned so far and explored. Beyond what a Docker container offers - DevContainers allow you to customize VS Code or any IDE that supports DevContainers. Which is an awesome feature for sure. However, I feel like we would be giving up the ability spin up multiple services using Docker Compose. I know we can use Docker Compose with DevContainers. But, Docker compose in this scenario is to spin up external dependencies. In a distributed stack, we are seldom making a change in just one part of the system. Today's challenge took us into the fascinating realm of Docker, where we delved into the art of containerization and Dockerfile magic. 🐳✨ 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱: For those unfamiliar, Docker is the wizardry that allows us to run applications seamlessly in containers. These containers are like self-contained universes, holding everything an application needs to thrive. And the secret sauce? The Dockerfile! 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲: A Dockerfile is akin to a recipe, guiding Docker on how to create the perfect container. It specifies the base image, commands to run, and files to include. Imagine crafting a container for a website: the Dockerfile directs Docker to use a web server image, incorporate website files, and start the server on container launch. Pure genius, right? 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗵 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆: ✅ Created a Dockerfile for a Simple Web Application: I chose to work with a Python web app, letting creativity flow and ideas soar. ✅ 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 & 𝗥𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿: Witnessing the Dockerfile's magic, I built the image and ran the container, seeing my creation come to life was a euphoric experience! ✅ 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: As a diligent end-user, I opened my trusty web browser, accessed the application, and voila!
