"Inverse Hanlon Manoeuvre" (name credits to Renato Todorov) One of my favorite razors: Hanlon's, states: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." For many years I have used this model to adopt a more positive approach to problems analysis. Critics will say with somewhat partial success 😅 On the other hand, (cyber-)security professionals have claimed, also for years, that this principle is misleading and dangerous. With global unrest, armed with technology at the stage where the boundaries between perceived reality and reality itself are no longer clearly visible, I hence declare this razor to have lost its edge. The opposite seems more and more often to be true, and that is malicious intent masked artfully as incompetence or a random anomaly. Hence expecting malice in what could be attributed to stupidity, seems to be the more rational way to go. My hopes are that this is a temporary bluntness, and determination, smart regulation/enforcement, and the best in us will become the grindstone to bring the sting and finesse to Hanlon's razor back again. #hanlon #cybersecurity #positivethinking
