Leadership skills are valuable in every position and every career. About two months ago I approached my supervisor with an idea for a "Lateral Leadership Initiative," where staff members that do not directly manage others can have an opportunity to practice leadership skills to grow both personally and professionally. I think these skills are vitally important not just for self-development, but also the fact that being a leader to peers is intangibly valuable to you and your workplace. After some partnering and fine-tuning with our outstanding HR department, we ironed out the details and will be launching the program in Q4 this year. The results of crunching nine years of Legitimate Leadership survey results are in! Over seventeen thousand team members' response, when analysed, are consistent with the original research underpinning our work. Namely, pay does not correlate with whether someone feels respected or fairly treated by their leader. What also comes through to me is that if we are interested in bringing the best out in our people we should look in the mirror and focus on developing our own coaching skills.
