How aligned is your Leadership Team? I asked this question to nearly a hundred CEOs, C-suite leaders, and executives at a recent conference... Only two responded with a confident ‘Hell yeah, our Leadership Team rocks’. 🙌 The rest? Their uneasy, "ahhhhhh, well," hung in the air. The tension was almost palpable, their body language told me all I needed to know about their team alignment. As an expert and thought leader in the field of leadership, this makes me infinitely curious… Why do Leadership Teams struggle to realign after inevitable disruption and change? Why are Leadership Teams failing to be consistently awesome, impactful, and resilient in the long term? First thing to know is that it is totally normal for teams to fragment and not align. When I was a kid, I always got this advice: "Always treat everyone the same." But when I coach CEOs and other C-Suite leaders as part of my work, I tell them the exact opposite: "Treat everyone differently." Because people...aren't the same. This especially is true of your employees. What motivates your fellow C-Suite leaders isn't what motivates your middle managers. What motivates your middle managers isn't want motivates the people on the line. Instead of treating everyone equally, focus instead on treating everyone fairly. As a leader, that means being visible and accessible to all groups instead of a few. Plan to be in the boardroom AND walking the production floor. It means asking for feedback, and being transparent about what can be improved or implemented and what can't—and why. It's about communicating early and often. And, it's about being honest with yourself about making sure you have the right people in the right seats. Being fair is ensuring the ones who don't fit your vision for the company are able to thrive somewhere else. It's a mindset shift, for sure.
