Another trip around the sun, another leap in leadership. ☀️ As I celebrate another year around the sun today, I find myself reflecting on the journey that has shaped me both as an individual and as a leader at Coastline Equity. With each passing year, the story of my career—intertwined with the growth of our firm—gains new chapters of growth, challenges, and triumphs. From my days as a club kid at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor in San Pedro to serving as the CEO of Coastline Equity, it's been a journey of relentless learning, hundreds of pivots and constant change. My life has been made richer through the support of an incredible team whose dedication is the backbone of our success, partners who share our vision of innovation and excellence, and clients who entrust us with not just properties, but their dreams for better communities and an enduring legacy. There are few, very significant things I care about more than helping build a #betterdirtworld. My Faith, wife, family, and friends all definitely come before this. But this isn’t too far down the list from there. Say what you want but I’m not blowing smoke. I care about seeing kids coming out of high school walk down a career path best FOR THEM and not their parents or their guidance counselors egos. The Dirt World is a great option many don’t know exist. I care about seeing everyone learn, grow, and stay safe in their roles. I care about seeing this industry thrive, because without it society as we know it would crumble. Working in the Dirt World may not be for me, but I respect the heck out of it. And right now, I’m here to do what I can to support it in my role. For BuildWitt as a company, that means helping the industry solve its greatest challenges. Right now, that has a lot to do with the industry attracting and retaining enough talent to keep up with demand. We’re doing our best to help with in a few ways…more on all that another time. But we’re a month out from helping do this in a brand new way. We’re bringing business leaders from around the industry together in one place. Not to just talk about the problems we’re facing. Not to point fingers or pass the buck. But to talk about real SOLUTIONS you can take back to your organization to implement on Monday. Be honest about what you want and why you want it. Once you have an honest evaluation you can share in vision together. Evaluation aligns teams and leaders so they are prepared to focus. What is a specific goal that your team shares? You want this to be as specific as possible. I am a firm believer that a specific request will yield a specific result. I am reminded of a few years ago when my wife and I had our sights set on buying a new house. Was that it? No. We had to imagine the house each of us wanted and talk about our visions together. We would look at pictures online and discern which houses we liked and didn’t like. Our desires for the size, color, and layout of the inside and outside slowly became clearer. By talking through our personal opinions and thoughts, we arrived at a specific team goal. We wanted a single family home built in the last 30 years with a small yard in a close-knit neighborhood. This was our what, but we needed a why to infuse meaning and purpose into the goal. Our why was that we wanted a single family home to create space for our growing family. I’m 6’4’ and my wife is 5’11” - Can you imagine how big our kids will most likely be!? Room to stretch out and relax was important, especially for a highly active family. At the same time, not being too far from others was important because we love community. Getting to know our neighbors and those around us was a priority. You might say that you want to get a promotion by the end of the year or hit your sales numbers out of the park, but why? Are you on a specific career track and want to hit a milestone before a certain age? Get to the heart of what it is you really want and embrace it. I’ve found that when we ask why 3 times in a row, going deeper each time we answer, we get down to the core reason for what we want. Vision and Direction Happy New Year!    As we enter 2024 it’s clear from a quick browse of LinkedIn posts that there is a definite theme. A new year seems to inspire reflection on the year just gone and motivates people to make changes as they think about what they want for the future.    It often seems to take an event such as a new year or a change in circumstances to make us reflect, but how do we keep in mind the things that really matter all year round, regardless of what’s happening around us?   At Starfish Partners we believe that keeping sight of a clear vision can be a game changer. It should be your north star, and if you can keep in mind what you want to achieve and where you are heading it can provide you with a picture of a different reality for the future. It can help you to make better decisions about what is important, and also what is not. It can make more sense of all the daily tasks and events that you do and link them to a bigger sense of purpose.   Talking about vision or purpose might sound like something unattainable or not practical, but whatever your vision might be it should be something to aspire to and that you are passionate about. Your vision might change over time, but if you’re clear about it then it won’t be just another new years resolution which starts with good intentions but has gone away by the end of January. Highlighting individual achievements → fosters a culture of 'going the extra mile' and being proactive for the cause 3️⃣ Celebrating the diversity “We could do all this thanks to the unique set of skills and perspectives everyone brings…” Celebrate the various backgrounds, perspectives, and talents that contribute to the dynamic and innovative work environment. Embrace and acknowledge the richness of diversity within the team—> emphasise that diversity delivers results. 4️⃣ Looking forward “What's on the horizon? Get pumped for what's coming, and let's dive into the next year ready to tackle it all.” Share a glimpse into the exciting prospects that lie ahead. Get people excited to tune back in next year! Instill a sense of optimism and anticipation for the future. 5️⃣ Gratitude I would argue the most important way to end any toast. Express gratitude for the hard work and dedication that everyone has demonstrated throughout the year. “It's been a ride, and your dedication didn't go unnoticed.” Highlight the importance of unity and collaboration within the team. Rest, Play, and Resilience - Summer 2024 As we round the corner into summer, I was recently reminded by the exceptionally creative and much-beloved Chief Guide, Sydney Davis, that if we are to progress to the next level of shared leadership, we must also master the SACRED ARTS of rest and play! In our action-driven world, we mistakenly misconstrue rest and play as lazy or non-productive, but this is false. Your energy is a precious resource, and there are ways of being that can enhance, amplify, and replenish it. By giving yourself sufficient rest and time to play, you can find the way forward more effortlessly. Being a balanced leader means learning to manage your inner resources with self-care, trusting that there is great value that can be achieved through rest and play. Be creative and plan to do something to celebrate yourself and your loved ones this summer. Having something to look forward to brings enormous satisfaction to the heart. Experiment with “living in the moment” more this summer. From a place of resilience, you can make profound progress. You can release striving and chasing in favor of receptivity. Great new ventures are incubated in silence and spaciousness. Give yourself time to enjoy life and restore balance this summer—you deserve it! And, btw… #elmolovesyou

It actually means more when we overhear it, or when it's shared by a third party.)
