The Australian Government is investing $707 million to deliver the Remote Jobs Economic Development Program (RJED). The program will provide jobseekers with real jobs, proper wages and decent conditions. An important part of designing this new jobs program is working in partnership with First Nations peoples. Consultation sessions will be held in remote communities across Australia until 30 June 2024. Staff from the NIAA will meet with First Nations people to hear what communities want as part of the program, how the program might work and what jobs are needed. We are also seeking feedback via an online survey from individuals, communities and organisations who have an interest in remote employment. This feedback is important to help inform the design and implementation of the RJED program. Here's one reason companies need to sponsor employees that you may not have thought about. Location. It's not the most common of reasons, but it's still important. For some companies, location works against them in regards to recruiting and retaining staff. Bigger cities offer greater opportunity for career and social opportunities What do you do if your business is doing well, needs staff, but is in a more rural/remote location? The reality is that local people might not have the same incentive to move somewhere more rural for work. I've worked with restaurants as far as the Shetland islands, whose business relies heavily on holiday makers. I've worked with industry leading care providers in some of the more remote parts of the country. Both struggled to fill positions and looked to hire internationals. Sometimes the reasons people have for needing a sponsor license are a bit more nuanced. Reflecting on my job search over the past few years, I've come to realize how many opportunities I've missed out on simply because I'm not a US citizen or a green card holder. Tech layoffs across the US are motivating techies to move to the Great White North, with more than 6,000 H-1B skilled worker visa holders arriving in Canada as of October this year, according to CNBC. This comes after the Canadian government launched a pilot program on 16 July which allowed 10,000 American H-1B visa holders to apply for a three-year open work permit in Canada. The program reached capacity the following day. According to the American H-1B program, any skilled workers using this visa have 60 days to find a new employer or transfer visa status if they lose their job. Otherwise, they face being deported from Canada. Canada’s tech sector has quickly gained momentum in recent years, growing 15.7% since 2020 compared to just 11.4% in America.
