Growth or money? My week in summary. As someone, who started out as a freelance writer, I randomly remember how I started out. Of course, the days actually aren't far behind. I started out in August. But, I doubled down on my efforts. I've spent time reading, applying principles, volunteering, taking on tough projects, courses, mentorships and many more. And to be honest, they've all helped me. A whole lot. I'm now a LinkedIn ghostwriter and Social Media Marketer. I work full time for a fashion brand and I absolutely love it there. Working there has truly helped me to expand my horizons. Yesterday, I realized that, I had updated my resume/portfolio at least four times since August. It's exciting because i'm proud of my growth. It seemed like an opportunity to take on more roles. However, I didn't want to do that. Usually, freelancers love to juggle jobs to earn more. That's not the case with me. I wouldn't be able to give out high-quality work. So, I declined every opportunity to manage more social media accounts. Will I earn more ? Probably not. Do I love this decision? Yes, I do. I refuse to be sucked into a system where, freelancers take on more roles than they can handle. In reality, it could mean more money but growth is rarely possible. Why? No focus. Maybe when I expand into an agency, I'll take on more. For now, I won't compromise on my values and slow down a company's growth because of money. Opportunity Set B is all the stuff available to you, but that nobody’s asking you to do." Over his career, Jason came to realize that Opportunity Set B is always more important. If you only focus on what’s asked of you, you’ll only be qualified to do the thing you’re already doing. But when you learn new things, pursue new opportunities, and constantly seek out change, you will set yourself up for an unpredictable but extraordinary journey. Jason’s went like this: He started as a community newspaper reporter, but quit, then sat in his dingy bedroom next to a cemetery in rural Massachusetts, and started freelance writing. Then he took a job at a slightly larger newspaper, kept freelancing, and then eventually quit, moved to Boston, and insisted that Boston magazine hire him. (He’d been freelancing for them, but he wanted a full-time editor job. It worked.) Then he moved to New York and started hopscotching around magazines (Men’s Health, Fast Company, Maxim) while constantly seeking out Opportunity Set B (going on TV, speaking on stage, teaching himself to podcast, writing a romantic comedy novel, starting a media production company, and more). Was he good at these new things? He was not! He'll tell you he was terrible at first. But as Ryan Reynolds once told Jason, “You can’t be good at something unless you’re willing to be bad.” "It is true. We all learn," Jason says. Because of Opportunity Set B, Jason now occupies a unique space. Through his work at Entrepreneur, he has access to the world’s greatest entrepreneurs, and is often speaking with the most influential culture-makers. Meanwhile, through his podcast Build For Tomorrow, Jason investigates the history of innovation and the forces that shaped our lives. In short, he finds patterns of success. 1. I joined LinkedIn to scout for gigs. Two weeks after I became intentional, I got a high paying freelance writing job. 2. After the rebranding of my brand, Scribe Studio. (A digital agency.) We went three weeks without getting contracts. We took a break, restrategized, and came back with renewed strength. Barely a week later, we got multiple contracts and international deals. 3. I was a writer on Facebook for a year. Showing up, writing content, buying data, scouting for jobs, before I got my first gig. 4. After writing classes and mentorship programs, I advice my students to show up regardless. Show up when you are broke. Show up when you are on free mode. Show up when you've gone so many weeks without a writing job. Show up when you have multiple gigs going on. 5. The endorsement you have been waiting for, the contract you're trying to secure, the competition you've been trying to win, the award you are hoping for... Can come after a day. It can come after a week. It can come after so many years. 6. Take a break. Restrategize. Cry. Show up. Stay consistent. Be patient. Just don't give up. I’m a criminal! Ok. Not quite. But … Yesterday, I had trouble convincing a former classmate that I’m not into some illegal stuff. Let me tell you how it all started ... On Tuesday, a former classmate reached out to me on Facebook. After a few chats, he told me he was in my town, so we agreed to link up. And so, yesterday we met. During our conversation, he couldn’t believe I sustain my life through “online jobs” He couldn’t fathom how someone could manage rent, drive, and even invest here and there just by doing online work. He was convinced that I was doing some shady stuff behind curtains and disguising myself as a ‘freelancer’ I’ve thought deeply about that …. And it’s quite sad that some people out here still don’t see freelance work as real work. To them, work is when you are somewhere in a big office on the 9th floor, working under a boss. In the last three years, I can’t count how many people have asked me whether I still apply for jobs. I’m always tempted to tell them that I already have a job… But then, why waste my energy explaining? I just let it be. As long as I stay on my path and pay my bills, we're cooking🕺 Tell me ... My post about wanting freelancers went bonkers, and I am hugely grateful to everyone who got in touch, always on the lookout for new talented people to work with, and now have a massive list of top writers - thank you! You might sense a 'but...' coming. It's just a bit of advice really (and it doesn't apply to 99% of the lovely people who responded). If you're answering a post like that on LinkedIn, try to avoid: 1: Messaging me through 4 separate channels, including my business and personal emails, and via an unlisted whatsapp number. 😐 2: Emailing my boss instead of messaging me here. 😬 3: Apply asking for a full-time content job when I'm asking if there's any freelancers who want to do a bit of blogging available. 😞 Showing initiative is great, but honestly, not reading a post properly and, in some cases, getting a little bit creepy with it... isn't. I totally get wanting to stand out from a crowd, especially in such a challenging market, but I'd also recommend taking a deep breath first before you respond, especially if you aren't connected to the person posting directly. I'm definitely more likely to respond if you just message me here/comment on the post itself. Now I feel like a miserable old man yelling at a cloud. You guys are the best, but you know, it's ok to play it cool sometimes, I promise.

2019 was a breakout year for me, and this old notebook is bittersweet proof. In my previous life, I was a freelance writer living project-to-project. I always carried a notebook. They held the DNA of my career—meeting notes, project drafts, you name it. They're like personal time capsules, freezing moments from various films, theater productions, and published works I had a hand in creating. Then I stumbled on this one notebook.📓 It was like finding an unfinished novel. It's got notes for some of my biggest projects-- my first mainstream feature film, my first published collection of short stories, a music album I helped develop. But it's only filled halfway because the pandemic happened. By 2020, projects vaporized. Contracts got pulled. My freelance life fell apart. The funds that were supposed to keep me floating through the year evaporated. So I did what so many had to—I pivoted.💡 For the first time, I ventured into a 9-to-6 gig. Just full-on corporate life in advertising. It was a curveball, but hey, that industry was pandemic-proof. It was a gamble and it worked out. I landed a job at a company willing to take a chance on me. And I spent the next three years absorbing everything I could. Fast-forward to today, and I've leveled up to a digital content director position in another company. The pandemic changed my career trajectory in a direction I never expected. And while this notebook has plans and projects that never got off the ground, I'm not dwelling on things that could have been. We gotta keep moving forward. Pivoting allowed me to survive some of the roughest times. It made me more versatile, and gave me a new lens to see my skills. And guess what? I'm still learning. I'm exploring new platforms (like LinkedIn!), studying evolving digital marketing trends, and learning from some of the most interesting entrepreneurs I've met. And I'm now in a place where I can balance my fulltime job and still have time for my personal projects. #Career #Pivot #Writing #Change

At the beginning of my freelance career, what I thought success looked like was: 🤔 - Writing "I helped X clients with my services" in the bio. - Having fancy vacations in exotic places. - Working all day in your business and not having time for anyone. - Telling people that you're making a six-figure income. What I discovered true success while running a business is 😀 > Retaining clients is a real success. > There's a huge difference between what people show on social media and what their lives actually are. > Working like a donkey doesn't make you successful, but having a schedule and system does. > I have met successful founders across the globe, and they never boast about how much money they're making. They stay humble and treat us as their equals. I have seen people posting about their possessions on social media, living broke, irl. I have seen people boasting about their staycations on social media, whining over a phone call about how dreadful it is. I have seen people living paycheck to paycheck, boasting about a fancy lifestyle. That's why I don't believe most people on social media. This was me one year ago. Just 1 month of posting 5 days/week on this platform. One month hoping freelance writing could become a career. - No clients. - No promises. - No certainty. And now...a year later... It's happening. - I have retainer clients (not 1 but plural) I click with 🙌 - A financial income giving me time at home with my kids 🙏 - And writing a weekly newsletter building a community I ❤️ Doing things I never thought possible. Why do I share this? Because you can do this too if you want it. (This coming from 15 years spent in a 9-5 never dreaming of starting my own thing.)
