People matter. Attitudes matter. This was never more clear than on a recent business trip to AZ. Because of scheduling I flew out on American Airlines and returned on Delta. Same Route. Both planes were similar, the flights were all on time and both legs went smoothly so operationally there was little difference. But there was a NOTICABLE difference in the attitude of the employees. American Airlines employees were downright grumpy, surly and clearly not happy. They didn't want to be there. The Delta employees were doing the same exact job, in the same circumstances but had a smile on their faces and clearly made an effort to make the rigors of flying as friendly as possible. In our business client service is extremely important. In the spirit of fairness, today was a perfect flight on American Airlines to complete yesterday’s travels from Scotland. 1) 6:00am flight from ATL to DFW left almost 10 minutes early. Gotta love the operational focus on the day’s first bank of flights. 2) Wifi worked. That may seem minor, but wifi is a minimum viable product attribute for those who need/want the business and personal productivity of staying connected. 3) Personal status recognized with a first class upgrade. The trifecta - operational excellence, easy to buy, personalized.  Rinse and repeat! Contrary to some views, I actually prefer these positive examples over the negative ones. Lessons can certainly be learned from both, but those who know me know I get my energy from positivity. Just as the morning sunrise represents a new day of possibilities (see what I did there with this morning's window pic 😀 ), I am going to start taking a slightly different approach with my posts going forward. More on that soon. Bottom line from this trip, while there were many areas for retailing/experience delivery improvements, I arrived home safely and that is priority # 1.  And for that, thank you American Airlines and British Airways.

I can lament the loss of jobs, but that doesn’t detract from the fact Canada’s airline sector is among the most challenging sectors of our economy. Air Canada Stocks remain exceedingly depressed and that’s long after being “saved” through public bail outs. If the biggest players can’t make a buck, budget lines are a non-starter. High-cost, razor thin margins, and profits based on squishy fuel hedges mean $200 flights to Mexico - or anywhere - aren’t a sustainable business model.

Lynx Air, the low-cost carrier based in Calgary, has recently announced that it will be ceasing operations, pointing to rising financial pressures and strong competition as the catalysts for this decision. This comes at a time when low-cost carriers have been struggling both operationally and financially relative to full-service airlines in the North American market. According to #IBAInsight, before ceasing operations Lynx Air operated a fleet of nine Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The airline had leased all its aircraft from the likes of BOC Aviation, SMBC Aviation Capital, AerDragon Aviation Partners, and High Ridge Aviation. These aircraft were deployed on routes not only within Canada but also to the United States and Mexico. The airline also had a further 29 737 MAX aircraft on order. The orderbook was split into eight 737 MAX 8 and 21 737 MAX 200 aircraft that were projected to be delivered between 2024 and 2030. Only recently there were discussions of a potential merger between Lynx Air and Flair Airlines, another Canadian low-cost carrier, which would have reduced competition and potentially saved Lynx Air from its unexpected demise. Unfortunately, Lynx Air exiting the market will result in fewer low-cost options for passengers, with the only other alternatives being Porter Airlines and Flair Airlines for short-haul regional routes. With long-established carriers Air Canada and WestJet dominating the Canadian aviation scene, it’s difficult to predict a positive future for low-cost carriers in the region.  - Nicolas Karagiannis, Aviation Analyst, IBA Group
