AUSactive is calling on the Federal Government to acknowledge the importance of staying fit and well by allowing tax deductions for gym, Pilates, yoga, tai chi, and active health memberships. This move aims to incentivise people to make their health a priority. We need your support to make this happen – and are asking that you sign our pledge. Shockingly, 75% of Australians aren't getting enough exercise. This lack of activity can lead to serious health issues like heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and dementia. Regular exercise can help reduce the risk of these conditions and prevent obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, and it's critically important for mental health too. Despite these clear benefits, gym and other active health memberships aren't currently eligible for tax deductions. Changing this would not only make it easier for people to stay well but will also save money on future government costs by keeping people out of the health system. Let's make investing in personal health simpler by allowing tax deductions for gym memberships. We urge you to join us by signing this petition. Your support will show that you believe in making physical activity more accessible and promoting healthier lives for everyone. Together, we can make our nation healthier and more active. As a tax payer I have absolutely no feelings of burden by the health conditions of my fellow Australians. It saddens me to think anyone would feel they could be a problem. I also agree, even making gym membership completely free would not increase uptake substantially enough to create a marked improvement in the nation’s health. Ultimately, participation in structured exercise programs, overseen by qualified professionals with health progress markers measured by regulated medical practitioners is the ultimate tool for unquestionable health improvement. How to get there will be a massive undertaking over many years. So glad to be finding more people like us who are determined to make this change 👌🙌

It needs to be results based to get the tax benefit IMO. Most gym memberships are wasted now let alone the wastage that would happen if they become effectively FREE (but great work if your organisation is representing gym owners). For the rest of us tax paying folk that care about health of Aussies ... I think if someone is metabolically healthy and not a burden on the $1B+ annual health bill, then they get to claim back their expenses involved in being "healthy". Then the program would be successful in trying to improve health. Positive bi-product would be people getting annual bloods done to prove their eligibility. Catching a whole lot of things early to help prevent nasty stuff later on. My 2 cents 👊

There is limited evidence that a tax deduction for healthy adults exercise and sport memberships would encourage greater participation. The incentive needs to be directly linked to participation, not just extra cash at tax-time. It's a shame to see a campaign from AusActive that isn't evidence based. Lots of ways to incentivise physical activity but tax deductions for healthy adults are not one. Happy to discuss further.
