Well, I keep seeing engineers and designers struggle with the basic concepts of sizing fire pumps, tanks, and utilizing the Hayes-Williams formula for calculating fire sprinkler system demand…or even understanding how many fire sprinklers on a set of lines to calculate. I can’t put this all in one post but if you follow me I’ll start breaking these things down for those of you that struggle with this. So how much energy does it take to lift 1 pound 1 foot? It takes approximately 746 watts to lift 1 pound a foot off the ground. This is equal to 1 horsepower. But more importantly for fire sprinkler systems or fire protection pumps, how much pressure would you need, in a column, to lift the water in the column vertically 2.31 feet? A. 0.433 psi B. 4.330 psi C. 1 psi D. 2.31 psi *follow me for answers

𝐃𝐈𝐅𝐅 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 : (𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠) A Deck Integrated Fire Fighting (DIFF) system is an effective fire suppression system that is normally the primary firefighting system on a helideck. The compact design of the system also allows it to be easily installed in storage areas and hangars used for aircrafts and helicopters. This versatile system can also extinguish a pool fire by mixing foam in the water at a specified flow, should the need arise. 𝐒𝐘𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐌 𝐃𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐆𝐍 The standard design of the DIFF system was developed based on decades of firefighting industry experience. The system connects the water supply to a series of open pop up nozzles through a network of dry pipework. A traditional on-off valve normally prevents the water from flowing through the pipes when the system is not in use, can install a pressure regulating deluge valve if the water supply requires one. Instrumentation and valves on the DIFF system are designed to allow for hassle-free operation, maintenance, and testing. The DIFF system can all be custom built to meet specific project requirements. Custom built systems will always be compliant with any required safety integrity level and full flow pre-tested before delivery. Furthermore, can design the release mechanism to be pneumatic, hydraulic, or electrical signals and the system can be built with piping on open frame or inside cabinet for environmental protection purposes. 𝐅𝐎𝐀𝐌 𝐒𝐔𝐏𝐏𝐋𝐘 The foam supply for this system can be provided by a separate tank outside or inside the skid, or from a central foam system, depending on the exact project specifications. The foam can be mixed with a variety of solutions listed below: Turbine foam proportioner Balanced pressure foam proportioner Foam inductor Constant flow orifice 𝐍𝐎𝐙𝐙𝐋𝐄𝐒 The recess mounted deck integrated nozzle that is flush with the deck when not in use offers effective fire protection that does not interfere with everyday work activities. This type of nozzle is available in several sizes and materials for different applications. The nozzle is designed to allow easy maintenance from the top and has a special feature for pressure testing of the pipe system after installation.

Sometimes, digging through amendments can take an hour. sometimes longer. Sometimes there is a small mention of fire alarm in the locks section requiring devices. Sometimes you'll find similar in sprinkler. Sometimes, the Ahj just puts fas in a completely odd place. Some AHJs have their own platform or they have have old links on their website or they have have old links in the regular page but new links on a weird obscure page. Or you design the same system 3 or more times because owner and architect keep changing their minds. or things are on back order so they have to change to meet what's available and agree with other codes. and that could be weeks of time that other drawings need. Some vendors just don't show useful values in their device cut sheets for a few of their devices. It's never "oh, all you got to do is just..." never. Not ever. Don't get me wrong, I love this job. All of it. Even if all of these things happen in every single job for a year straight, I love this job. The knowing I've done my best to study what is required and exactly why it is required. I've done my best to makes tools that measure within code requirements and. Made tools to calculate based on NFPA 70, 72 and 170 to assure that I will not design something that will fail and harm anyone due to any miscalculation and to include as many other code functions I may need to respect and identify to help assure the design meets code. Why? Because I love this job. It's what I should have been doing all along.

Gate Maintenance: Wooden posts When wooden posts are used to hang gates, it is important to regularly check their condition as part of the maintenance schedule. Overlooking this important structural requirement can result in a catastrophic failure and a potentially serious accident. A quick and easy way to check for rot is to use a sharp pointed knife. Push the knife into the post at ground level, and if it stays there and grips the blade when you pull it out, then the post is sound. However, if the blade falls out, then the post is possibly rotten, and further investigations should be carried out. The same test can also be applied to wooden gate leaves - the condition of the wood is especially important near joints, hinge bands etc. ⚠️ Remember that anyone involved in servicing and maintenance has a responsibility to leave the gate system in a safe condition. This isn’t just associated with mitigating impact and crushing risks arising from the automation, but also relates to the structural integrity of the gate supports and overall installation. #gatesafety #gatesafe
