Our brains love shortcuts. But as our ancestors on the savannah discovered, not every scary-looking silhouette in the distance is a foe. Sometimes, it's just Dave from two caves over. This week’s essay (issue no. 19) covers the guilt by association fallacy. What is it and how do we avoid it? #CriticalThinking #AssociationFallacy #HumanBehavior #Philosophy #NewsletterHighlight https://lnkd.in/grMmZ9Kp

Tisha B'Av, also known as the 9th of Av, will be observed on August 13 with a day of fasting and reflection. This day commemorates the trials faced by the Jewish people throughout history, from the destruction of the Temple to the Pogroms, Holocaust, and, most recently we have added the events of October 7. It offers us a moment to reflect on our current world and consider how we can contribute to positive change, especially as we confront rising antisemitism and general incivility. This solemn occasion highlights the importance of empathy, urging us to foster safe and supportive environments where discrimination is actively challenged. The resilience demonstrated throughout history inspires us to promote adaptability and strength, supporting one another through adversity. Additionally, Tisha B'Av underscores the value of community and solidarity, reinforcing the need for a culture of inclusivity and respect. By embracing these lessons, we can work toward a more empathetic, resilient, and respectful society.

On International Day of Remembrance of Victims of Slavery, we are remembering the millions of men, women and children who were brutalized in slavery through the transatlantic slave trade. This is not just a reminder to #RememberSlavery and its legacy of racism and prejudice that lives on today, but a call to action. The transatlantic slave trade would not have come to an end without the powerful activism of people who were themselves enslaved. They bravely shared their first-hand experiences, built awareness and mobilised community action bringing an end the horrors of historical slavery. Today, we need to do more to create the space to empower survivor leaders who know better than anyone that we need change. The Freedom United community is actively demanding a global society where modern slavery no longer thrives and where survivors are empowered to lead. You can do two things today to join the fight against modern slavery and help build a movement that is led by survivors and informed by lived experience. 🖋️ Take action by signing the My Story, My Dignity Pledge and commit to represent modern slavery and survivors’ experiences with dignity: https://lnkd.in/dXY-BG9 💬Tell us if you think enough is being done to #RememberSlavery and victims of the transatlantic slave trade? Would you like to see more memorials? And do memorials go far enough? 🤔 Share your thoughts in the comments & how slavery is remembered wherever you are in the world 👇

This is the coda to my recent governance series, which turns to our duty of care to each other – our friends, families, relationships and communities – and how that intersects with care for ourselves at a time of great grief and great pain. Because duty of care applies to Boards and artists and arts and cultural workers, but it applies to everyone else too. Watch Part 4 – on community and loneliness, circles of preoccupation and care, how history will judge us, and how nothing is ever lost online – including our silences. https://lnkd.in/gCc_cm3c
Kate Larsen on Instagram: "These are the bits that didn’t quite fit in my call for Boards and Board members to talk about P-lestine. Because duty of care applies to us as Boards and artists and arts and cultural workers, but it applies to everyone else too. Because crises like these are both community making and lonely making. And because nothing is ever lost online - Including our silences. . Che
