Happy first day of winter from ECS! “I have fond and vivid memories of helping my grandmother prepare the Christmas meal for our extended family. In doing so, (although I did not realize it at the time) I was: -strengthening our connection -learning how to prepare meals and recipes that would be passed on to other family members -developing an understanding of steps needed to prepare home (like cleaning and decorating) and food (like picking pecans, shelling and chopping–long before stirring them into Grandma’s fudge!)” -Marjorie Wild Cooking and other practical life activities have lots of value for young children, as long recognized by the Montessori method: “In doing practical life activities, the child can develop a high level of concentration, develop a sense of order, take pride in completing a job, increase independence, develop respect for his or her community and surroundings, and improve fine motor skills—both in general and with an eye to the particular skills that a child will need for more cognitively demanding work such as reading, writing, and mathematics.” (from the article, “The Importance of Practical Life Activities Within the Montessori Method” from @Guidepost Montessori). Of course, there are times and places within the kitchen that are off limits to little ones due to safety reasons. But whenever possible, include children in food prep appropriate for their ages and abilities. Here are a few ideas that add fun, learning and connection into cooking traditions: -Make or decorate cookies or other seasonal refreshments. Have your child stir, observe and describe cooking/mixing changes, and tell the sequence of the process. -Follow recipes, measuring, counting scoops and waiting for a timer to count down minutes. -Practice important social skills like setting a table and social greetings. Food work (in this case, pickle slicing) is an important part of the Montessori environment. Food work is a form of Practical Life where children learn to care for themselves. The child not only learns how to make their own snack, but these materials also promote fine motor skills and remembering sequences. #FoodWork #PracticalLife #MontessoriSchool
