The Armenian nation has encountered mounting challenges, placing us at a pivotal juncture in the annals of Armenian history, especially for our compatriots in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). Today, as we reflect on the third anniversary of the beginning of the 2020 Artsakh war, we want to think of these dedicated individuals who embody service, compassion, and resilience. Through their stories, we find hope for a brighter future and a stronger homeland. The challenge is real: in 2024, we face numerous decisive elections that will have a major influence on the functionality of our democratic system. How much more political fragmentation and polarization will we see - and what does that imply for responses from civil society, policy makers and staunch but silent democrats? These are only some of the questions we discuss within our Alfred Landecker Foundation community. #defenddemocracy #inthistogether
“We want to foster connections, work together on ideas, learn from each other, challenge each other, and be inspired by each other,” says our co-CEO, Silke Muelherr, speaking at last summer’s Landecker Community Summit. Encompassing various backgrounds from academia to activism, our community thrives on unique and unconventional perspectives, driving us to find innovative solutions to the pressing questions of our times. The Landecker Community is a network of people from organisations that are funded by us or who are otherwise interlinked with our work. Together, we support and empower each other, striving collectively to remember the Holocaust, fight antisemitism and other forms of group-based hatred, and strengthen democracy and the rule of law. In April 2023, I moved to Colombia, working for the Peace Corps in the Community Economic Development sector. For those unfamiliar with the Peace Corps, it is an independent agency of the United States government that trains and deploys volunteers to provide international development assistance. Their mission is for “Volunteers to live and work side by side with community members on locally prioritized projects, building relationships, exchanging cultures and knowledge, and helping transform lives for generations.” My role in the Community Economic Development sector is: 1. Promote personal and economic development in high school students. 2. Improve the ability of community members to devise and start small businesses, with emphasis on women’s groups and vulnerable groups. 3. Strengthen people’s ability to manage their money appropriately. Teach the basics of personal finance for economic empowerment. This photo was taken at my cohorts swearing-in ceremony, which took place after three-month of intensive training in: technical (Community Economic Development); language; intercultural competence, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility; health and wellness; safety and security. So far, my experience in Colombia is better than I could have ever imagined, but that could only be known to a small amount of people, due to my lack of presence on social media. I find myself wrong for doing this, as one of Peace Corps' three main goals is for volunteers to “promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans”. From now on, I plan to better publicize my life here in Colombia as a personal testimony to the wonders and beauties of this country that have been lost in the stereotype that has been constructed for it.
