For semiconductor companies, prioritizing talent as a top strategic objective is no longer an option—it’s a necessity. The semiconductor industry is at the center of a high-stakes race amid a broad recognition that chips will be the engine for the next wave of growth and innovation. From South Korea to Germany to the United States, companies have announced plans for massive new fabs. In all, close to $1 trillion in investment is expected from 2023 to 2030. This frenzy of global expansion could reshape the industry and disperse the balance of power around the world. Talent will be a critical part of the equation in this evolving industry. Business leaders can pursue a number of actions to make the most of the existing workforce, harness previously untapped pools of workers, and fill the remaining gaps with contingent labor. TSMC founder Morris Chang: Taiwan must safeguard 3 semiconductor industry advantages: 1. A highly educated workforce willing to work long hours; 2. Low worker turnover rates 3. Good public transportation that shuttles engineers easily to TSMC fabs across Taiwan It can be seen that Morris's leadership has lagged behind, and his love for technology is more inclined to profit monopoly rather than the long-term prosperity of the entire industry. Are Your Decisions Aging Well in Your Role? 🤔 In the 1980s, Andy Grove and Gordon Moore, the co-CEOs of Intel, faced a critical decision regarding their memory chip business. Intel's roots were in memory chips, but they were losing ground to Japanese competitors. One pivotal conversation changed their course. Andy asked Gordon, 'What would a new CEO do if they took over?' Gordon's response was clear, 'Exit the memory business immediately.' Andy's bold reply? 'Why don't we fire and rehire ourselves to do just that?' This story from Intel serves as a powerful metaphor for all of us: Metaphorically fire yourself before others do. Then rehire yourself to make the decisions that matter most. Ego can be a barrier to growth, and resistance to change can hinder progress, especially if you have been in your role for a while. To inject fresh perspectives, sometimes leaders are replaced with external talent. On a regular basis, assess how your business environment or staffing situation is evolving. Identify which decisions need reevaluation. And then, metaphorically, fire and rehire yourself to drive those changes. Encourage your teams to do the same with past decisions.
