The Role of Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) in Offshore Surveys The vast expanse of our oceans remains largely uncharted, with only about 15% of the global ocean floor mapped by modern survey systems. For offshore industries, understanding the seabed topography is essential. Whether it’s locating oil and gas deposits, ensuring pipeline routes are obstacle-free, or maintaining stable positions near offshore platforms, precise positioning is paramount. Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) Explained An INS calculates an object’s position, orientation, and velocity without relying on GPS technology. It’s like having an internal compass and gyroscope for marine vessels. INS devices use accelerometers and gyroscopes to measure motion and rotation, providing critical data for navigation. Let’s dive into how INS works and its key components: Sensors in an INS: Accelerometers and Gyroscopes: INS devices use accelerometers and gyroscopes as motion and rotation sensors. These constitute the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and may sometimes include magnetometers. These sensors communicate with a computer unit, which translates their data into actionable controls. Together, they offer accurate information for position changes. Accelerometers: these measure changes in linear velocity, while gyroscopes measure rotational velocity. Typically, three accelerometers and three gyroscopes are used, aligned orthogonally to cover all three dimensions of movement. Dead Reckoning System: INS operates on a dead reckoning system. Initially, an external source (such as a GPS receiver or operator) provides the object’s starting position, velocity, and orientation. As the object moves, the INS continuously calculates and updates its position, velocity, and other motion elements using data from motion sensors. How can RTK Correction of GNSS location signals help achieve precision location for construction projects and surveyors? Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) have transformed numerous precision-oriented industries over the past few decades. Construction, in particular, has greatly benefited from the real-time positioning data in satellite constellations like GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and Beidou, enabling a more seamless, speedy, and accurate realization of engineers’ plans in the real world. Most construction firms now rely on GNSS signals for conducting everything from initial site surveys to live progress check-ins for their projects. Yet, atmospheric interference, technological discrepancies, and more can distort the accuracy of GNSS signals, throwing off results by several meters. In construction, 10 centimeters could be the difference between smooth project execution and catastrophic problems. The Root Mean Square Error or RMSE is a frequently applied measure of the differences between numbers (population values and samples) which is predicted by an estimator or a mode. The RMSE describes the sample standard deviation of the differences between the predicted and observed values. Each of these differences is known as residuals when the calculations are done over the data sample that was used to estimate and known as prediction errors when calculated out of sample. The RMSE aggregates the magnitudes of the errors in predicting different times into a single measure of predictive power. In the map below, I used GCP's (Ground Control Points) that were placed around the site to stitch together the photos. The GCP's are a constant measure that can be calculated to give you the RMSE. Additionally, I used a RTK base station to connect to the satellites and my drone. The level of accuracy achieved with this configuration was 0.67 of an inch. If I used a waypoint in this configuration, I would have achieved half of the current value. Bobbitt Construction Inc. They are used in various stages, including pre-installation surveys, foundation installations, cable connections, routine field inspections, and decommissioning processes. These advanced robots are capable of performing a range of tasks, such as visual inspections, managing corrosion through cathodic protection readings, cleaning and removing marine growth, executing photogrammetry, creating 3D point cloud models, gauging material thickness, and conducting laser imaging. Yes, Large manned aircraft can cover larger areas faster, but at what cost? Drones can provide a more insightful inspection of not only emissions, but overall site quality at a much more reasonable cost. In a single flight, I am capturing 4 videos using Optical Gas Imaging(OGI), Thermal Imaging, Wide angle lense 8k, and Zoom 8k; while also running a gps enabled mobile methane sniffer on top. Giving you 5, up close and detailed inspections at a time. Higher altitude flights are surely capable of precise methane detection over a larger aera faster. But unless its done daily, why is the speed important to you? And does that high speed inspection provide you with anything besides a large methane leak? The lower cost allows for more frequent inspections, giving faster detection times overall!
