JLR laying off 20% from its JV with 奇瑞汽车 Chery Automobile Co.,Ltd. in China. Their sales have halved compared to their 2017 peak. Facts to consider: 1. ICE carmakers (mostly foreign) are losing money and market share left and right. 2. Supply chain vendors will be (and are already) badly affected 3. These ICE car companies (usually) pay better than their local competitors. But perform worse in sales and EV innovation. 4. The local competitors don't have the capacity to hire all of these people coming to this market. It's an employer's market. Maybe JLR could buy some NIO shares...

Automotive Japan: 𝐓𝐨𝐲𝐨𝐭𝐚, 𝐘𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐡𝐚, 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬, 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. A brief update right here. Transport Ministry officials started onsite inspection at the headquarters of Toyota Motors and Yamaha Motors. The Transport Ministry 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬 to obtain product certification. The Transport Ministry will 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚, conducting 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥 to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the situation. The onsite inspections started Tuesday at Toyota Motors and Wednesday at Yamaha Motors. 𝐓𝐨𝐲𝐨𝐭𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 confirmed it falsified test data based on test simulations (unrelated to any actual accidents) on vehicle tests that simulated collisions with pedestrians. The tests concerned three models currently in production. In addition, vehicles used in crash tests were not according to the certification rules, which involved four models no longer in production. 𝐘𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐡𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 confirmed that it did not conduct noise testing by the certification regulations on one type of motorcycle it currently produces. Yamaha stopped deliveries of that model. Some other irregular testing were also found on two other motorbikes it used to manufacture. The Transport Ministry mentioned that it would 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐳𝐝𝐚, 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐳𝐮𝐤𝐢, the other vehicle makers that have admitted to misconduct. To what extent automotive supply chains will be affected remains to be seen. HR news update: Honda is reducing its full-time production workforce in China, with approximately 1,700 employees opting to depart so far. The joint venture GAC Honda Automobile, a partnership between Honda and Guangzhou Automobile Group, is seeking voluntary layoffs amidst declining car sales. This move reflects the challenges faced by Japan's legacy car brands in China against local competitors like BYD. The shift in consumer preference towards electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids has put pressure on Japanese automakers in the market. The 1,700 workers who opted for voluntary retirement represent 14% of the production staff. Honda operates several factories in China, facing a 5.8% drop in passenger vehicle sales in April due to fierce price competition and consumer spending caution during the economic recovery.

My First Toyota Boss – Harada san I was introduced to Toyota by a Poly friend in 2003. During the interview, the GM who interviewed & hired me was Mr. Tetsuro Harada. He told me that Toyota wanted to establish a global quality system and wanted someone with IT background. I was then working in EDS, and he told me the following: 1. If accepted, I was to work in his Production Admin dept. till the system was established 2. Then, he would propose transferring me to Information System Dept. I simply agreed as I really wanted to join Toyota as cars were one of my loves in life. Then and there began my journey with Toyota. Harada san was one of the key persons who shaped my Toyota mindset: 1. Customer First - he would run from his desk and pick-up the desk phone of a colleague that was ringing - he told me, as a true respect to the caller, the call must be picked before the 3rd ring - this despite, the fact that, the line had a voice recording function! 2. Employee Focus - he would take the trouble to print out Japanese emails, translate it into English - then he would call you and explain it with next action clearly each time 3. Teacher Supreme - when we go to Japan for business trips, he would rent the latest Toyota models - while driving, he would show and explain the new features of the car to me - for example, when Prius was newly introduced, he showed me how the shift-by-wire works 4. Professional Integrity - after overseas meetings, he would go for fun drinks and so on till the wee hours - but the next day, he will be the first to wait for others at the meeting place - 3am, 4am, the previous night, no matter = he will be on the dot the next day! This is why, I always advise the youngsters starting in career to choose a good Supervisor, rather than a good pay. Due to Harada san, some of those mindsets has been with me till today, 21 years later. Harada san was a gem of a Boss and a Mentor, that I will never forget! p.s: 1. Photo below taken in 2004 after watching Toyota sponsored Nagoya Grampus Eight match in Toyota Stadium in Nagoya. 2. Photo was taken by Harada san's 80 year old mum then. Adios Amigos.

My personal thoughts regarding Chinese electric cars: Chinese electric car manufacturers are trying to enter the EU market with the tactic of making a cheap car whose name you can't even pronounce or remember. European consumers are accustomed to high-quality service and a large service network across Europe. This is the only way to build consumer trust so that they would buy cars. Another important element is the high quality of the product itself and the customer experience. When Toyota first came to the EU market, it took them many years to create such a customer experience that allows them to enjoy successful sales worldwide today. Building such a strong sales and service network takes a lot of time, you need to find the right people, and the manufacturer must have a lot of money. Yes, Chinese manufacturers might even have that money, but there aren't too many people in this field in Europe to hire. Anyway, it's exciting to follow this development.

"Toyota says it halts some Tianjin operations after report" Amid reports of a partial production suspension due to weak sales, Toyota Motor has clarified that the halt in production at its joint venture in Tianjin, China, with FAW, was a planned move. The Japanese automaker is actively adjusting its production strategies in response to the evolving market demands and vehicle composition. This development comes as Toyota faces the challenge of slowing sales in China, a significant market that contributes to nearly a fifth of its global sales. The company's focus on adapting to these market changes underscores the dynamic nature of the automotive industry in one of the world's largest markets.
