A century apart, but both stepping into national politics in a year ending with a 6. 🏛️ Election as President: 1860 for Lincoln, 1960 for Kennedy. Exactly 100 years apart, each leading to transformative presidencies. 🤝 Successors Named Johnson: Both were succeeded by vice presidents named Johnson from the South - Andrew for Lincoln and Lyndon B. for Kennedy. 🔎 Assassins Known by Three Names: John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald, both remembered with three names, totaling fifteen letters each. 📖 Special Committees for Their Deaths: The aftermath of their assassinations led to the establishment of special committees to investigate - the Warren Commission for Kennedy and the Military Commission for Lincoln. I find these coincidences between two of America's most iconic leaders absolutely mind-blowing. But I'm curious—what am I missing? What does Presidents Day commemorate? Presidents Day was initially established in 1879 to celebrate the birthday of the nation's first president, George Washington. In fact, the holiday was even simply called "Washington's Birthday," which is still how the federal government refers to it, the Department of State explains. In the eyes of the federal government, Presidents Day celebrates the nation's first president, George Washington. Following the death of the venerated American Revolution leader in 1799, Feb. 22, widely believed to be Washington's date of birth, became a perennial day of remembrance, according to History. While initially being recognized only in Washington D.C., Washington's Birthday became a nationwide holiday in 1885. The first to celebrate the life of an individual American, Washington's Birthday was at the time one of only five federally-recognized holidays – the others being Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July. However, most Americans today likely don't view the federal holiday as a commemoration of just one specific president. Presidents Day has since come to represent a day to recognize and celebrate all of the United States' commanders-in-chief, according to the U.S. Department of State.

I offer this quote in recognition of the birthday of President Franklin Pierce, who is not to be confused with the Chief Surgeon of the 4077th M.A.S.H. unit. The latter went by Franklin Pierce, but his full name was Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce. Times have changed. President Pierce (D) was the 14th President of the United States. Times were different back in the 1850s. At one point, Pierce served as a Brigadier General while our last three presidents have had no military service as part of their experience. In fact, the last two presidents each used five deferments to maintain their civilian status. Correspondingly, the quote itself underscores the change. While our country still faces "the storm of frenzy and faction," the Constitution no longer remains "the unshaken rock" it was believed to be back then. In fact, many argue that it is a "living document" that "evolves, changes over time, and adapts to new circumstances, without being formally amended." At some point, the concept of "paper covers rock" seems to have taken on a new meaning. That being said, some things haven't changed. Pierce caved to political pressure and signed the Nebraska-Kansas Act that allowed slavery to expand to the West. That ultimately led to his demise. It allowed the northern faction of his Party to make him a one-term president when it nominated James Buchannan instead of the incumbent. Campaigning has remained the same as well. Pierce was disparaged by his opponents as an anti-Catholic coward and alcoholic, while he was deemed by others to be a gaffe-prone public speaker who couldn't articulate his points. Character attacks have only gotten worse in recent years.
