Enhancing and Sustaining Competitive Edge through Competence Dave and Tom, Directors from Cisco Learning & Certifications in the US and UK, collaborated with us during a series of launch events and meetings, while also getting a perspective on the skills landscape in Africa. Looking back on our meetings at the beginning of March, our suspicions regarding the gap within knowledge and expertise among engineers, particularly in automation and programmability was highlighted. It was clear that technological advancements have reshaped the competitive landscape, raising awareness to companies to ensure their technology teams are well-aligned and certified in line with strategic objectives. A survey of 3000 hiring and technical managers revealed that 44% struggle to acquire the necessary skills. Neglecting skills development and certification risks falling behind competitors. A recurring theme in our meetings was the challenge of retaining skills, which contributes to the continent having an estimated 300 CCIE’s compared to around 900 in the UK and Australia each. The allure of higher earning potential and opportunities abroad draws skilled professionals away. The pace of technological evolution has outstripped traditional methods of maintaining certification and relevance. Engineers expect their companies to support their professional growth. The message was clear: addressing the skills deficit requires a long-term strategy emphasizing certification and skills development, rather than merely acquiring skills. Nevertheless, neglecting the development of your teams IT skills is not an option. If left unconsidered: The demand for skills will continue to inflate IT salaries beyond market expectations. Failure to keep pace with new technology deployments jeopardises managed service contracts, deployment / migration to complex networks, productivity drops and teams will be less engaged. Competitive advantage hangs in the balance. There is reason for optimism, but decisive action is imperative. Despite all the challenges, investing in education results in benefits such as enhancing understanding and proficiency in complex network concepts and technologies. Trained engineers contribute to improved customer experiences, support, and expedited incident resolution, enhancing your competitive position. With 33% of surveyed companies struggling to retain employees, it's evident that addressing the skills deficit is a shared concern. Your long-term strategy to safeguard your competitive edge necessitates a robust and meticulously planned skills development initiative, ensuring you remain competitive against firms that prioritises continued skills education.
