This week’s #MemberMonday is Nicole Newkham Binkley CFRE. Nicole is our current VP of Communications. She spent her first year in Habitat for Humanity and next year will be on the Strategy Committee. Outside of JLD, she is the COO of Austin Street Center, the largest low-barrier homeless shelter in Dallas. Nicole says, “I am currently in my 6th active year of JLD. I wanted to meet like-minded women; women like me who want to change the world and make it a better place. My favorite event is the provisional bus tour - getting to see our agencies at work and the impact our donations make is critical to understanding JLD. As just one member you sometimes lose sight that as a group of 4,000 women, we make a HUGE impact in Dallas. Seeing this impact across the city during the tour motivates me to continue showing up. “I love our DEIB initiatives this year and think they are BOLDLY setting a new path for Dallas. Partnering with Together We Dine and the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum have educated our members on issues we haven't been talking about. This is crucial to learn from our mistakes and understand our community.” As for advice for Provisional New Members Nicole says, “DIVE IN! You truly get out of this experience what you put in. I have grown my career; and had babies and the women I have met through JLD have supported me every step of the way. We show up for each other, even when days are hard. JLD has shown me how women can show up for each other in a supportive way where we all thrive and I hope each Provisional New Member can feel this support and thrive in her own way.“ #BeBold #MemberMonday #JLD

Domestic violence affects us all, and in Utah, it has an even greater impact. Shockingly, 1 in 3 women, 1 in 4 men, and 1 in 2 nonbinary persons will experience violence in their lifetimes. If it isn't us who's experienced it, it's our family, our friends, and our coworkers. But the good news is that we can all play a role in ending violence. Organizations like South Valley Services exist to help survivors build a brighter future. At South Valley Services, we witness firsthand the unfathomable strength of our clients and staff and the hundreds of miracles that unfold every day. But we can't do it alone. Our mission is made possible by our financial supporters and volunteers, and we would love to see you and your company at our annual breakfast fundraiser on May 23, 2024. Sponsorships range from $1,500 to $10,000, so there's an entry point for most companies. We have an international bestselling author, Janine Latus, coming to speak, and who doesn't love breakfast foods? If you're interested in supporting our cause, or know someone who is, please reach out to me for more information or tips on how to approach your company's leadership about sponsoring our event. And, if you've sponsored in the past, thank you – we hope to see you again this year! Our vision at South Valley Services is to foster an environment where everyone is safe, respected, and acknowledged in the home, at work, and in the community. Will you join us in pursuit of a better tomorrow? Hello LinkedIn - reaching out with an important ask for everyone in our mission-driven world: Independent Sector and Council on Foundations have partnered to file a critical amicus brief to the Supreme Court. Right now, fundamental 1st Amendment rights are under attack, in the form of a lawsuit by the American Alliance for Equal Rights. AAER has sued the Atlanta-based Fearless Fund – led by Black women and committed to providing grants, tools, and mentorship to women of color – claiming that its program for Black female entrepreneurs is racially discriminatory. We believe that philanthropic organizations, charitable nonprofits, and individual donors have the right to exercise their values and views through giving money and other resources, as protected by the First Amendment. That includes efforts to support historically marginalized groups. Any argument that it’s discrimination to help Black women gain opportunity in a field where they are underrepresented ignores the history of our nation. Furthermore this lawsuit threatens to discourage donors, restrict work toward equity and justice, and harm communities and causes nationwide. Please join our call to support a future that remains committed to social, racial, and economic justice by signing our statement here: https://lnkd.in/gEu46k29 Our collective voice is more powerful with each and every one of yours. #supremecourt #nonprofitleadership #philanthropy #equity Dr. Akilah Watkins Kathleen Enright

As organizations work in the trenches, reforming America's entrenched systems, they face nonstop pressure. Now more than ever, we need the bold support described in recent discussions: foundations stepping into the fray, not back, to fortify these crucial movements. True solidarity means sharing the risk, not shying away. It also needs to be stated that Inclusivity in Black-led movements means embracing all members of the community. Ignoring the needs of Black men with initiatives focused only on women, girls, queer, and trans individuals, leaves our collective pursuit of justice incomplete. It isn’t innovate; it’s leaning into the divisiveness. #keepBuilding
"Simply moving money isn’t enough if you create unnecessary hurdles or uncertainties in the process. Organizations need long-term grant commitments that increase with the rates of inflation over time. They need unrestricted funding that allows them to adapt quickly to changing conditions. They need funding without strings attached. They need more agency over where the money goes. And they need to receive those funds in a way that doesn’t require unnecessary paperwork or grant reports that no one will read or draw lessons from." ~Hanni Hanson of the Compton Foundation #Philanthropy #MoveTheMoney

I am taking the lead from a post of my friend Laysha Ward. In sum, she says give prople their flowers now instead of waiting. In that vain, I want to give flowers to Shereese Turner and Chris Coleman of Twin Coties Habitat for Humanity. Last night I attended their wonderful gala and raised money for homes to be built for those who could not otherwise afford them. The gala raised over 1.1 million dollars in one night! However, that is not the great part. The great part is that Twin Cities Habitat is applying racial equity to make this happen. They are not using general terms like BIPOC AND POC to determine how programs should be designed and where resources should be allocated. They are instead digging deeper and finding that intentional discrimination and racism against direct descendants of slaves of US born blacks (foundation) had a different and significant impact that requires a specific solution that will yield results. To their credit, Twin Cities Habitat distinguished between domestic and immigrant populations and was not fearful of saying these solutions are for the Black Family. Sheresse as an executive leader and Chris as CEO made this happen and as a result increased homes built for this population from 8% to 22% and it is continuing to grow. In a time where non profits and private and public companies are running from race solutions, Twic Cities Habitat is running towards the problems that were caused by intentional discrimination and saying we are here to solve it at its root cause. For this reason, I give Shereese Turner, Chief Program Officer and Chris Coleman, CEO their flowers and encourage all of you to invest in this amazing organization.
