Three trends that will be important in Private Equity this year As Mutares SE & Co. KGaA has already achieved several milestones since the beginning of the new year, I've reflected on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Contemplating the future of Private Equity, three key themes will influence the trajectory of our industry and guiding our efforts to propel Mutares forward. Global realignment will gain increasing significance in the Private Equity sector: The global realignment has already reshaped various industries. Due to geopolitical changes, there is a growing need for a strategic reevaluation of global corporate landscapes. At Mutares, we recognized this trend and have (and will further) positioned ourselves with a network of global local offices outside Europe, ensuring that we are in the countries where the opportunities will be. ESG will be increasingly integrated into investment decisions: This subject resonates with my belief that sustained corporate success should be intertwined with corporate responsibility. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria are not only capturing media attention but are also set to become an integral part of corporate culture. Particularly, Due Diligence is expected to be shaped by ESG criteria. Inflation will continue to be a significant challenge for Private Equity in 2024: The effects of inflation are still distinctly noticeable. While a decline in the inflation rate is expected for 2024, the calibration of the “new normal” remains a substantial challenge. Higher financing costs, and increasing resource and labor costs, weaker demand, will continue to be difficult. It is important for us to confront this challenge not only reactively but proactively, acting innovatively and agilely to emerge strengthened as a company and Group from this phase. These topics resonate with both challenges and exciting opportunities for my personal and entrepreneurial growth. I am optimistic about the unfolding developments and I am confident that Mutares will not only navigate challenges successfully but will also emerge stronger and more resilient. Is thematic investing simply strategic or can you generate better returns by being tactical too? Our research shows that tactical considerations add to the strategic imperative to lead to better returns. The low correlation of the respective generated returns enhances the overall performance. In the model that we developed, the strategic is captured by the Fundamentals and the tactical captured by Trend and Mean-reversion, all of which are underpinned by over 50 individual strategies representing these investment theses.
