✔ Joby acquires Xwing autonomy division ✔ We're pleased to announce that Joby has acquired the autonomy division of Xwing, a leader in the development of autonomous technology for aviation. Founded in 2016, Xwing has completed 250 fully autonomous flights and more than 500 auto-landings to date, becoming the first company to receive an official project designation for the certification of a large uncrewed aerial system (UAS) from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in April 2023 and the first to receive an Air Force Military Flight Release in 2024. The Superpilot software, developed in-house at Xwing enables safe, uncrewed operations, supervised from the ground, and is the world’s first fully autonomous gate-to-gate flight technology. While the aircraft Joby is certifying will have a fully-qualified pilot on board, we recognize that a future generation of autonomous aircraft will play an important part in unlocking our vision of making clean and affordable aerial mobility as accessible as possible and this acquisition places Joby at the forefront of aviation autonomy. Welcome to the Joby team! Read more: https://lnkd.in/eAbm64MC

Awesome news. This acquisition proves at least three things. First, Joby is thinking multiple moves ahead on the chess board. The type certification of Joby's S4 is on a steady path and clearly the Joby management team is already now working out where to go from there. Second, these Xwing people are voting with their feet. They are the consummate AAM industry insiders who have achieved a lot and are now keen to become part of the Joby team. Third, Joby has the wherewithal to do acquisitions. Unlike most of its competitors the company has the resources to build a deep moat of Intellectual Property by picking up the best technology companies in the inevitable consolidation in the AAM industry. I was already excited about Joby owning H2Fly, but this appears to be another strategic move and indication that Joby is playing the long game.

Curious what Mark Moore thinks :)

I am sure this has potential however I would hope common sense prevails and strict limits of operational environment and thus the paths flown are controlled in this progressive experiment. Avoiding the overflown population whilst proving the technology in real operation. Hope the FAA is on the ball at flight testing oversight and if they provide the OEM applicant (Joby + Xwings) with Certification approval
