Such great news that Sweden and Greece have banned bottom trawling! Greece has prohibited this harmful practice in marine parks and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), while Sweden has implemented a COMPLETE ban in all territorial waters. 🌊⛴️🚫 If you’re unaware of what bottom trawling is, it’s a fishing method where heavy nets are dragged across the sea floor. This process not only captures the target fish but it also scoops up everything in its path, leading to high bycatch rates. As well as destroying seabed habitats and seagrass beds. This is why it’s fantastic to see Greece and Sweden taking significant steps towards sustainable fishing and marine conservation. Bottom trawling is a destructive fishing method that drags heavy nets along the seafloor, causing significant environmental harm. It leads to overfishing, bycatch of non-target species, and severe damage to seabed habitats, including vital ecosystems like coral reefs. Additionally, bottom trawling disrupts carbon storage in marine sediments, exacerbating climate change by releasing large amounts of CO2. To protect marine biodiversity and combat climate change, all countries should prohibit bottom trawling, especially in marine protected areas, and support sustainable fishing practices.
