LOST IN SPACE Over the last decade, the United States has increasingly relied on satellite systems for military operations, communication, and navigation, making them some of our most critical assets. During this same period, our adversaries developed more sophisticated counter-space capabilities, particularly as they relate to EMI, EMPs, and DEWs. In recent years, Congress and the DOD have begun to play catch-up budgeting, spending some $842 billion in FY 2024 and providing a modest increase for FY 2025. Given the immensity of the threat and the sheer number of assets at risk, this expenditure level will not reduce the threat significantly. #spacewarfare #EMS #EMP #nationaldefense

Good piece on the challenges posed by "Space warfare". With unclear bondaries between civilian & military and ambiguous rules of engagement, Space has become a "gray zone" that calls for different approaches than other domains. This shift from conventional war is clearly a challenge for armed forces, that will need to adapt and bend their traditional approaches to counter hostile competition. Let's not forget our "why" for working to develop, launch, and operate new national security space capabilities. According to General Whiting's congressional testimony yesterday, the People's Republic of China (PRC) is threatening US space superiority. The PRC is moving breathtakingly fast in space and America must rapidly increase the timeliness, quality, and quantity of our critical national space and missile defense systems to match China's speed and maintain our advantage. As members of the aerospace community, our goal should be to rapidly develop capabilities in the space domain to maintain American air, space, land, and maritime superiority. Great Op-Ed from Christopher Stone profiling some fairly significant challenges that the United States Space Force currently faces. Budget is certainly at the top that list - and I guess I don't find that aspect too surprising. I have been in the military for quite a few years and it almost never seems like we ever really have the money we need (yes, the DoD budget is always mammoth, but somehow we frequently find our public affairs monies elusive). The need to more effectively develop the best tech for mission and purpose is also something I might expect. But I found the author's discussion about legal and policy concerns the most interesting and truly compelling. I have spent the last couple of years here at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) working within NATO policy and regulations to build brand-new military public affairs organizations that could prove critical to potential future execution of the Alliance's Regional (Collective Defense) Plans (military units, in other words). As such, I can see the beauty in the author's argument that senior leaders and planners need to ensure that both the policy and regulations/laws pertaining to the Space Force are adjusted to more closely fit where the organization needs to move both now and in the future, and to counter the very real threats out there. Japan’s recent emphasis on space security is significant and creates opportunity. On the eve of Japanese prime minister Kishida’s visit to Washington D.C. on April 10, 2024, there is a substantive space agenda that the leaders can advance to bolster the security of both nations. Its national security strategies are strongly linked to the policies and actions of the United States, with the bilateral relationship mentioned time and again as key to success. U.S. and Japanese leaders can harness this moment to shepherd deeper space cooperation, galvanize their public and private sectors to act with urgency, and demand the delivery of space capabilities that meet the challenges ahead. Some reflections from the 1st ever NATO Space Symposium in Toulouse April 29-30: 1. The importance of the space domain for modern defence is growing. Space already is and will incresingly be become an integral part of NATO's multi-domain operations. 2. The innovation pace in the commercial & dual use sector is many areas outpacing the innovation of government and military Space programs. This trend will likely further accelerate. 2.
