Special thanks to Mohammad Ahmad, Jehad, Jimmy, Scott and the entire leadership team from Atlantis for inviting me to their Grand Opening in Mahwah today. I'm always impressed how much a retailer can do with tight confines, like this 1,600-sq-ft store. The site, which Atlantis Management acquired from an area fuel wholesaler, accomplishes quite a bit: > Over-indexes smartly on energy drinks across its 13 cooler doors > Further elevates Atlantis' increasing investment in fresh grab-n-go food, b2c coffee, pizza, etc. > Focuses on the grab-n-go consumer with heavy emphasis on King size snacks, cartons of cigarettes (taking advantage of being relatively close to the tax-heavy NY border), high-margin general merchansise. I was particularly impressed with several features and strategies: - Rewards... Atlantis is pretty new on the rewards/loyalty, yet have roughly 20,000 members in about 8 months, with growth accelerating. - In-Store Promotions. The retailer is aggressive on promotions and every day low prices (edlp)... from the pics they use color codes to signal a promotion and a different color for edlp. let's see if you can figure which color is for which pricing feature [go to my facebook link below] - Design. pay attention to the signage's clean text and subway tile backsplash that gives this store a clean-yet-gritty urban touch, coupled with faux wood motifs on interior columns above the subway tile, yielding stronger earth tones. stronger earth tones. Only 18 yrs old, Atlantis started out on the fuel side, growing its network across the Northeast. Over the past roughly half-dozen years, it has made enormous strides on convenience retailing end as it parades toward 100 company-run locations (currently at 89 and should hit the century mark by next year). How a Minnow size MOM & POP Furniture Retailer Survives in an Ocean of Bigger Fish I work for a small furniture retailer that's been in business since 1989. These days our competition comes from other local shops, retail chains with deep advertising pockets, Mega Big Box companies and online retailers. So how is this little store still surviving? 1) SPECIALIZING. We stay in our safe zone. America the Beautiful Dreamer was a regional bedroom furniture franchise. The Boise store, which Randy Shelton opened in 1989, carries mattresses, bedding, futons and kids' beds in addition to bedroom suites. Renditions Furniture began as a design oriented living room, dining room and home accessories store in 1999. Cherie Shelton introduced bespoke upholstered seating; unusual and one-of-a-kind handcrafted wood furniture that went against the grain of the polished, traditional looks existing stores carried. She emphasized quality over price; cozy over formal, and in doing so created a new niche. (Fourteen years later, Joanna Gaines would explode on the design world with her "Modern Farmhouse" aesthetic featuring many products Renditions carried in the early days.) 2) RELATIONSHIPS. Through the years Randy and Cherie have developed strong partnerships with the people who make our furniture. Most are family owned and operated enterprises which have a vested interest in our small store's success. Loyal customers have been the lifeblood of our business. For three decades and multiple generations customers have returned to where they are genuinely greeted, reminisced with and attentively served. (AI may have a great memory, but it doesn't care how the grandkids are doing in soccer.) 3) RESILIENCE. Through economic downturns, supply line delays, or unprecedented growth, being small has allowed us to be nimble. Being just big enough, has allowed us to be dependable partners with our vendors. When COVID hit, Randy met customers by appointment and immediately saw the shift in buying patterns and responded accordingly. As COVID wore on, buyers shifted again and Cherie adjusted immediately. 4) LOCAL KNOWLEDGE. Randy used to run ads to correspond with bonuses at a local manufacturer. We have close ties with our community and can meet needs that are too insignificant to profit big companies. 5) BEING GOOD FRIENDS WITH OTHER MOM AND POPS. We refer customers to each other all the time. None of us can be all things to all people, but all of us can strengthen our community by supporting local. We are excited to serve you, Saratoga Springs! We signed our lease and began the planning process over 26 months ago. At times I loathed the wait, but am now realizing that all of the wait was worth it. It provided time to complete Lehi Bakery Main Street construction, plan our operations strategy, and (most importantly) develop our people to set the store up for success. I couldn’t be more proud of our team from top to bottom who all contributed insights, training, and the much needed willingness to do anything and everything outside their formal job descriptions. There dreaded words “that’s not my job” have never been uttered. Our team always does whatever it takes. The proudest part of today is that I get to call my friend, Jeff, the leader and manager of the store. He is a Saratoga Springs resident, and has developed from an entry-level donut fryer into a store manager. The people development process is the reason why this career is starting to feel more and more like a calling. If today’s opening wasn’t enough reason to celebrate and reflect, it is worth mentioning that we also received unanimous final city council approval from Cedar Hills last night for what will become Lehi Bakery #3 this fall. We are excited to watch that construction process, and develop a new group of leaders. With all of the reasons to celebrate, and with life sometimes feeling like it is going 100 miles per hour, I will be taking some time off to dedicate to my family, with limited work requirements. The “dark side” of being an entrepreneur has at times (inexcusably) caused my focus to drift. I struggle with being able to consistently balance work and family life, and sometimes a little detox is in order to recover, recalibrate, and refocus.
