I walked into my company headquarters in NYC a few years back. I got asked a surprising question 🙋♂️. It stuck with me. My sales director 🕺 asked if I ever mark-up the cost of our products to clients or prospects? This caught me by surprise 😮. I had often marked-down my price and even covered certain fees, including equipment costs. “No way” I blatantly expressed. “I’m in the business of bringing on clients, not loosing them to our competitors.” It took half an hour ⏳, but I quickly joined the other side. I needed to be schooled 🚌 and I left with homework 🎒. I wasn’t properly appreciating 🙏 the value that I had brought. In reality, I’m a part and parcel 📦 of my product which puts me above the rest in my industry. Shouldn’t I charge 💰 for it too❓ Two years later ⏰, I still don’t up-charge and still cover those same fees. Though I now heavily believe that I’m not just a byproduct of my product, But am often what separates me from my competitors. The day he got fired, I learned the most important rule in sales. Here’s what happened (and how I changed my approach to every deal): So back when I was at Meow selling high yield business banking to startups I had this deal. A Series A startup had just raised $15 million. And they were earning no interest in their checking account. Translation: A juicy opportunity So I get their Head of Finance excited. We get approval for $10 million. And schedule a call 7 days away to complete onboarding and wire the money. The day of the call I send my guy an email. I get a bounce back. Me: “Well this is odd” Maybe it’s something with my email..? I call him and it goes right to voicemail. I show up to our Zoom. He never joins. I send another email… no response. Me: “WTF is happening?!” But I try to stay calm and wait a few days. I get ghosted on my follow ups. After eternity, I get an email from his CEO: “John no longer works at the company. We’ll be pausing any finance decisions for now.” The Head of Finance got fired. I easily could have blamed bad luck or timing. Instead, I created one simple rule to run every future deal. Rule: Every second a deal doesn’t close makes it more likely to die. No exceptions. So I treat every passing day a deal isn’t done as an existential crisis. How did I change my behavior? • Fight to schedule a new meeting for today instead of next week • Reply in seconds to a customer email to compress timelines • Default to call + text vs. email for faster response times • Seek to schedule follow up meetings for tomorrow instead of next week Time kills all deals. — (I’ll be unfiltered here for 100 straight days… as we march towards shipping an unsexy product for VCs)
