If you could solve any problem in the world, what would you solve? It was a Wednesday morning, and it was a lecture-free day for me. I woke up very hungry, and I was in dire need of something to eat when suddenly I heard the voice of a little boy screaming by your sweet okpa( a delicacy that is popular in eastern Nigeria). I called him and bought from him while I was still making the purchase. It dawned on me that this child is supposed to be in school, not hawking. I then questioned him while he wasn't in school like his mate, and in his words, he said "Aunty, it is not like I don't want to go to school; it's just that there is no money, but if I had the chance to go to school, I would like to be an engineer." This child was smart, but to him, being an engineer was just a dream that might not come true. Although this wasn't the first time I saw a child out of school, this touched me the most. If I had the power to solve any problem in the world, I would focus on creating a solution that addresses the issue of educating children around the world.  It's heartbreaking to think about children missing out on education and being forced to work instead. If I had the power to solve this problem, I would focus on creating accessible and affordable education opportunities for all children, especially those in vulnerable situations. By providing quality education and support systems, we can empower children to break the cycle of poverty and have a brighter future. Every child should have the right to receive an education. Education is a powerful tool that can transform lives and create a more equitable world. If I had the power to solve this issue, I would focus on creating accessible and inclusive education systems that address the unique challenges faced by these communities. This could involve providing resources, infrastructure, and teacher training to ensure quality education reaches every child, regardless of their socioeconomic background. Education is a powerful tool that can uplift communities and break the cycle of poverty. By investing in education, we can empower children to create a brighter future for themselves and their communities. Let's continue to advocate for equal access to education for all children around the world. Together, we can make a difference and provide children around the world with the education they deserve. November 1 marks WeCare Africa's 2-year anniversary and the grand finale of our literacy competitions. It's been a dream and a steep climb, but through WeCare, I have learned that everything is possible if you believe. Two years ago, I went for my community nursing experience in the rural village of Awa. Somehow I heard the community nurses talking about several children who had been out of school due to financial strains and how they'd been contributing to help. Then I asked how much: the amount was mind-bogglingly so insignificant compared to the long-term benefits. Fast forward two months later, I shared my vision with a group of young people to address that need: WeCare was birthed with a vision to break the barriers that keep children out of school in underserved communities across Africa. With school fees often less than $10 per year, countless children are denied the education they deserve, perpetuating a cycle of poverty.  Over the years, we have evolved, missions retweaked to encompass more but still the same drive . Our Why: WeCare Africa exists because we believe that every child has the right to quality education. Education is the cornerstone of empowerment, providing the tools and opportunities needed to build a better future. Our Theory of Change: Awareness Advocacy Action Empowerment Because many children in underserved Nigerian communities lack access to quality education, we work in these areas to empower and educate them, helping them break the cycle of poverty and achieve sustainable futures. The Next Phase: The Literacy Competition As we celebrate our 2nd anniversary, we are excited to culminate our journey with the literacy competitions. This initiative is a 3-month regional competition that aims to empower young minds through literacy, fostering a love for reading and learning. While ending with a BootCamp workshop that equips at least 500 rural children with practical skills in Tech, SDGs, entrepreneurship and leadership. During one of the information sessions at a secondary school in Malawi, Africa, a student approached me. He confided in me that he was on the verge of dropping out because he couldn't afford to pay the $10 school fees for that term. Despite his best efforts, he had exhausted all his options to raise the money. I shared his story with my team, and one of our volunteers stepped up to pay his fees until he finished secondary school. Sadly, this was not an isolated incident. At every information session we held, we encountered students facing similar situations. Fortunately, there was always someone on our team willing to help cover their fees. However, we soon realized that this approach was not sustainable. We needed a more permanent solution. Two things became clear to us: first, there were many students who were at risk of dropping out because they couldn't afford the $10 fee. Second, there were people who were willing to support these students with their hard-earned money. This realization led to the birth of Maphunziro265, the organization I co-founded. Our goal was to bridge the gap between these two parties. Since 2016, we have facilitated this process for over 60 students, some of whom are now attending public universities in Malawi. Recently, we partnered with Standard Bank Malawi to support girls at Lilongwe Girls Secondary School, Lilongwe, Malawi. In my next post, I will share some of the lessons I have learned about managing relationships with individual and organizational sponsors, as well as the students who benefit from their support. It's a more complex process than I ever imagined.

By encouraging ECD workers to obtain official qualifications and mentoring center owners and principals through processes like school registration with the Department of Social Development, the project gives them access to vital subsidies that can further enhance the quality of education offered. Through this comprehensive approach, not only do they invest in the professional growth of educators, but they also provide a safe space for young children to thrive and learn. It’s that time of the year to meet with the stakeholders at the Elaine Education Foundation. We are a bridge to help children access and enjoy their right to education. During our stakeholders’ meeting, we meet the children in our scholarship program (62 of them now), their parents, representatives from their schools (over 30 schools), donors, community members, and our EEF team. The children also register for the next academic year and submit documents from their schools showing a breakdown of their fees. The children in our scholarship program were either out of school or on the verge of being out of school because of a lack of funds. We moved from having 52 children in our scholarship program for the 2022/2023 academic year to having 62 children for the 2023/2024 academic year. We plan to increase this number yearly as, according to UNESCO, about 250 million children are out of school now (read here: https://lnkd.in/gr_gubGq). The range of their fees was $22.50 - $226.71/year last academic year. With inflation, we anticipate an increase this year.
