Todays Feel Good Friday takes a field trip across the state to Suffolk, VA! My esteemed interviewee, Tora Foster, is an administrative extraordinaire at our Lawrence Equipment branch. I took a few moments out of Tora's day to see what being a part of Lawrence Companies and our different divisions meant to her: 1. What does being a Lawrence employee mean to you?   Being a Lawrence Employee means I am part of a family / community based on growth and development. I am given the opportunity to further my CASE education through web academy which has been pivotal in helping me learn my job and do it to the best of my ability. At Lawrence, they want to see us thrive as individuals and it means so much to see a company put their employees first.     2. What are your personal goals and (additionally) long term goals with Lawrence Companies?   I want to thrive during my adjustment into this industry and I want to get to know the basics of equipment maintenance & services to better aid the Parts Counter and Service department in sales. I also want to continue to learn as much as I can about the company so I can become a key member of the team. I’m going to familiarize myself with Equipment Rental rates, forecasting and Equipment sales to broaden my career path into Equipment Salesperson or Management. 3. What bring joy to your life? What gets you out of bed in the morning?   Being a mother to JC and Jaylin Foster brings joy to my life. They are two of my funniest, silliest, and outgoing 15 and 13 yr olds I’ve ever met. Being their mom and coach on the sideline brings me so much joy and I love watching them play and grow into amazing leaders on the field. They are both very smart and athletic and have big dreams that I hope I can make come true one day. They are the reason I get out of bed in the morning. I want them to be proud of their mom and see that even at 36 you can start your path on a new career, and you can have a job that you love. It isn't hard to see that Tora brings a lot of passion to her career path. Continued education of the industry, applied interest in the business, and long term buy in on a career that supports growth. These characteristics embody our servant leadership model. My one tip for early career professionals: don't be afraid to move🚗 I wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't moved many times in my career. > Rockford, IL > Chicago, IL > San Diego, CA > Chicago, IL > St. Petersburg, FL. Being open to moving somewhere I didn't want to live, gave me more job options and career opportunities. I've worked on many different parts of aircraft and for multiple companies. I've seen how different companies operate and learned about multiple areas of the aviation industry. These diverse experiences have equipped me with a wide range of transferable skills that have been instrumental in my growth. Remember, when you try new things, that knowledge stays with you and propels you forward in your career. After you've picked up more experience, then you can be pickier. For example: I'll never live in Rockford, IL again 😅 What's one tip you'd give to early professionals?

Today marks my 15th year at C.H. Robinson. Who would have thought a kid born into trucking and grew up building pallet forts, sweeping docks, and pretending to be productive on the forklift would end up in the 3pl world. There is no imagining what life would have been like without CHR personally or professionally. Throughout my time I’ve been blessed with great leaders and mentors who’ve given me the latitude to innovate, lead, and grow inside this organization. I’ve also been blessed with the best teammates, peers, colleagues one could ask for. Lastly, the relationships, mentorships, and partnerships gained across customers, carriers, vendors, and competitors continue to be one of my favorite aspects of working in this industry.  Below are a few perspectives and guiding principles I’ve gained along the way: -         Always be curious. I’m learning more in year 15 than I did in year 1. The more I learn, the more I realize I don’t know. -         Be a servant leader. Never underestimate the power of a motivated team that’s bought into the mission/vision.  -         Pressure is a privilege. Get comfortable operating outside your comfort zone, you’ll grow the most there. -         Invest in your network. Build your network internally and externally, it’s extremely rewarding both personally and professionally. -         Build win/win partnerships. Someone else’s candle doesn’t need to go out for yours to shine brighter. -         Be a solutions provider. Identifying a problem is a skill, solutioning around it separates you from the rest.  -         Diversify your perspectives: You become a product of your environment, build and surround yourself with people better and different than you.  -         Have Fun! You get one go at it, its ok to enjoy the ride along the way. A big thanks to all in my network who’ve been a part of the first 15 years! With high aspirations I look forward to what the next 15 has in store!

As people come back from the summer vacations and kids head back to school, there is a sense of rebirth and new possibilities in the air; a time for setting new goals and working toward achieving them. Today is my ten-year anniversary in the industry. From trainee lettings negotiator in Fulham to being responsible for Berkshire Hathaway's sales and lettings teams across our London network, here are ten simple things I've learned over the last ten years, from myself and some great people. 1) Choose your mentors carefully. 2) Keep it simple - do the basics at an elite level. 3) Find a way to put yourself in the other person's shoes and see things from their point of view. 4) As a negotiator, be selfish with your time; as a manager, be selfless with yours (focus on winning through your team versus wanting to be the star yourself). 5) Control the controllables (the serenity prayer mindset!). 6) Focus on the process, not the results. 7) Challenge and teach versus being an order taker and yes-man. 8) Choose your mindset/Expect the best - look for the positives rather than the negatives. There are always some! 9) Deny the drama (decrease the stress). There will be tough days, weeks, and months. It doesn’t mean you are suddenly a bad salesperson. 10) Free yourself by giving yourself a structure. What’s in the diary gets done. (Bonus) Always be coachable and wanting to learn new ideas !
