“What do you need to do during the early phases? The answer is everything. We all know that's not possible. So we have to prioritize. And sometimes we have to prioritize pretty ruthlessly and and decide what are the things that are milestones that we can get funding for? And what are the things that are not fundable milestones, but we know we're going to have to fill that gap at a later date?” Meet Harlee Sorkin, co-founder of Common Place Holdings, LLC, which has successfully spun out eight #medtech ventures, including InterShunt Technologies, Inc., where he currently serves as CEO. At InterShunt, Harlee’s team is developing a heart failure technology through a less invasive method: interatrial shunting. By improving blood flow and lessening the heart's workload, InterShunt’s proprietary transcatheter system holds promise of easing heart failure symptoms. Despite the broader slow-down in VC funding, medtech saw over 20 % growth in deal value in Q1, according to the latest data from Pitchbook 📈 One good thing that could come out of this cooling period, is an increased focus on healthcare and medtech from venture capitalists. In this #LSIUSA23 panel, Raymond W. Cohen says that founders get too caught up in the concept of dilution when trying to finance their companies. In his view, founders should be avoiding 2x and 3x liquidation preferences, and be less worried about dilution. “Dilution is all part of the game”, he says. “You can’t finance your company unless you’re going to give up equity.” When you can create real value, dilution becomes less important. Owning just a small percentage of a company that has real value will still create generational wealth. This March at #LSIUSA24, Axonics, Inc.
