In the US this week, we celebrate the right of each individual to pursue their dreams and potential on July 4th. It’s a powerful vision that attracts people from all over the world. Like so many others, I arrived here from another country. I think we come to find a way to meet our basic human needs – whether safety, food, shelter, work or love – and from there to pursue our growth, development and dreams, or to seek the opportunity for our children to do so.
These same needs and wants are shared by those who came before us. And by those who come after us.
I think that - at its core - coaching work is to support and facilitate these deep human drives toward development, belonging and contribution. However, we – humans – try too hard at times, we push through fatigue and stress. “No pain, no gain” is an old saying that I don’t agree with. “More is better” seems to be in our culture. And when we falter, critical self-judgment.
When I look at coaching from this perspective, I see the importance of holding ourselves and our clients with acceptance and compassion. A career and a life are long-term commitments and we are not effective if we burn out; if we try so hard that we injure ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. And so I coach for well-being, for health and joy, for life.
At our best, coaches help liberate our fellow humans from limiting beliefs and biases, and catalyze development toward self-realization, fulfilling contribution and well-being. We facilitate agency, and both in-dependence and inter-dependence.
If you haven’t worked with a coach before, give it a try.
