For me, one of the best ones is learning more about the incredible and vital environmental work happening in the UK Overseas Territories (UKOTs). Australian Environmental Grantmakers Network (AEGN) have launched their new Nature Funding Framework, which presents priorities and opportunities for its members to protect, restore and manage nature and realise the full potential of their giving. Philanthropy has a vital role to play in scaling up the existing solutions and building new and emerging initiatives to respond to the interlinked nature and climate crises. That said, it cannot and should not replace the role and necessity of public funding, but it can leverage the success of the strong #privatelandconservation sector, which is already delivering on-the-ground capacity and existing domestic investment. With whole-of-government support, a significant uplift in public and private investment, and strong policy mandates, we can achieve so much more for nature.  

🎊🎉Yesterday, we at Prospex Institute, and especially our WaterLANDS team, celebrated World Peatlands Day. 🙌🎈 🌿The day recognises the wonderful, essential things that peatlands do for us and the Earth: they are our planet's most concentrated natural carbon sinks, acting as havens for rare species and buffering extreme weather events like floods.🌱 💧We are so proud to be a partner on the Horizon 2020 WaterLANDS project, which, especially through its Ireland and UK Action Sites, is working to restore and conserve these crucial ecosystems.🗾 🔍Want to know more? Blue Youth Project Report - Shorewatch with Highlands and Islands Environment Foundation Shorewatch, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation's (WDC's) flagship citizen science project, has launched a new youth volunteering programme to expand its reach and impact. For 15 years, the project has been tirelessly gathering data on the 21 extraordinary species of #whale and #dolphin that grace Scotland's waters. An incredible team of 200 dedicated volunteers spread across 28 sites has collected a vast body of data. These insights drive #marine management policies, #safeguarding these majestic creatures and their homes from various human threats, including #marinedevelopment, fishing gear entanglement, pollution (both noise and plastic), and disturbance caused by well-intentioned but unaware individuals. Here are some of the project's outcomes: 👥 81 young minds educated through theory and practical sessions, made accessible with binoculars, transport and free events. 📣 8 engaging talks engaged local communities across 5 community events and 5 webinars, informing them about Shorewatch's mission. 🎓 682 Shorewatch records and 6 student university projects collected through data collection via an app, empowering participants to contribute. Last month, over a hundred participants joined the second #EUBlueParks Community workshop ‘Effective management of Marine Protected Areas’ 💡. With attendees from various sectors including agencies, #researchers, NGOs and investors, the workshop fostered #collaboration and #knowledge exchange. Here’s a glimpse into the inspiring outcomes of the meeting: 🔍 Addressing Challenges: From tackling implementation hurdles to bridging data gaps, discussions focused on overcoming obstacles to enhance the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). How do we achieve this? Participants of the workshop unanimously agreed: this is a team effort! We need everyone to get on board to come up with long-term solutions. 💡 Innovative Solutions: The workshop showcased pioneering methods in marine management, emphasizing nature-based solutions and hybrid techniques to restore degraded habitats. 🚀 Future Endeavours: Exciting plans as the community continues to serve as a platform for networking, knowledge-sharing and partnership building in marine protection and restoration. This conference will be top of my list next year, it was one of the most informative I have attended. Great panellists, excellent information and discussions. The closing session was perfect because whilst everyone is passionately working to the same end, our diverse experiences and background mean we don't always agree on the route to take. This is exactly how it should be if we want to solve these issues, disagreement is healthy. #naturebasedsolutions #naturefinance
