What do "Great Leadership" and "Music" have in common? Music is all-consuming. 🙆♂️ Our reaction to a great song can be so visceral that we are forever connected to it. 🎧 Hearing that song can bring you back to a moment in time, and often, it binds you to a person too & every time you hear it, you are there with them again, reliving a wonderful moment. This is something every leader aspires to do with those around them as well: to inspire and move people like great music does. They highlight the leader's role in empowering others, fostering growth, and helping individuals overcome challenges to reach their full potential. For musicians, this resonates deeply. Leading an orchestra requires guiding and restoring harmony within the group, often demanding focus during important rehearsals, away from external distractions. Practice and rehearsal are vital for restoring and refining musical performance. In a leadership context, this emphasizes the importance of the behind-the-scenes effort and dedication needed to bring out the best in a team. Effective leaders nurture and develop their team, focusing on their growth to achieve excellence together.

Thriving and innovative organizations operate more like an orchestra and less like a pipe organ. Here’s what I mean by that: Pipe organs are musical 'machines'. Each part serves a function. You have your pedals, pipes, keys, knobs, etc. These parts are mere mechanical cogs that serve specific duties. The player (leader) plays the music and the parts (staff) perform their functions, oblivious of the melody. This is the industrial model that has dominated organizations for more than two centuries. Today, effective leaders understand that for teams to be highly engaged with what they are doing, and have ownership over their work, they have to come together as musicians, not cogs. This is why it is key (pun intended) that organizations start designing their work cultures to be more like orchestras and less like pipe organs. Only then can leaders bring out the extraordinary in each team member and create a buzzing and vibrant workplace.
