Horner, Eren Erman Ozguven, Billie Ventimiglia, and Dennis Smith. 2024. “Understanding People’s Safety Perceptions During a Recent Evacuation: The Case of Hurricane Ian (2022).” Findings, January. https://lnkd.in/gA6MW-_S. This study examines how individuals affected by Hurricane Ian (2022) perceived safety-related issues during the evacuation based on a Pollfish survey (n=100) in Lee County, Florida. 62% of survey respondents evacuated, with the majority going to a friend or relative’s home, and personal vehicles were the primary mode of transportation. Greatest concerns during evacuation included the cost of food and amenities, traffic congestion, and standing water. Upon returning home, primary concerns were disaster debris, fuel availability, and the availability of food and amenities. A binary logistic regression was employed to explore socio-economic factors’ impact on evacuation decisions, revealing significant factors.

It's been nearly 3 months since Hurricane Otis made landfall in Acapulco, shocking laymen and practitioners alike with unprecedented rapid intensification from a Tropical Storm to a 165mph+ Category 5 Hurricane inside of 24 hours. The scope of the resulting devastation is nearly incomprehensible. As we look ahead to the upcoming Atlantic Hurricane Season (less than 6 months away!), Emergency Managers, Resilience Planners, Floodplain Managers, and First Responders in the United States need to understand the game has changed. This scenario, for so long nothing more than a 'Worst Case' brought up as part of an annual preparedness table-top exercise, is now a data point. We need to collectively begin planning for a situation like this, thinking of how we would respond to the very real possibility that a strike like this occurs, and drafting plans that address the impacts. At a minimum, evacuation routes and emergency shelters need to be reevaluated for a massive influx of people at the last minute. Maps updating the built environment and incorporating newly-built structures, demolished structures, and infrastructure will be critical to assess response times and needs.
