Coca-Cola's Q2 2024 Financial Performance Reflects Growth and Strategic Initiatives Coca-Cola recently reported a 3% increase in net revenues to $12.4 billion, with a significant 15% surge in organic revenues. The company also witnessed a rise in operating income by 10% to $2.63 billion, showcasing notable improvements in the operating margin from 20.1% to 21.3%. Although there was a 5% drop in earnings per share (EPS) to $0.56, comparable EPS increased by 7% to $0.84, surpassing analyst expectations. Regional performance varied throughout the quarter. Europe, Middle East & Africa witnessed a 24% growth in price/mix with flat unit case volume, while Latin America experienced a 5% increase in unit case volume, driven by strong performances in Mexico and Brazil. However, North America reported a 1% decline in unit case volume, offset by an 11% increase in price/mix. In Asia Pacific, unit case volume grew by 3%, led by India and the Philippines, although price/mix declined by 3%. Coca-Cola attributed its success to strategic initiatives, such as the "Celebrate Everyday Greatness" campaign and innovations like the ultra-lightweight affordable bottle in India, which significantly enhanced consumer engagement and market reach. The company has also raised its full-year 2024 guidance, anticipating 9% to 10% organic revenue growth, despite the anticipation of currency headwinds impacting comparable net revenues and EPS. CEO James Quincey expressed optimism about meeting the company's raised guidance and long-term objectives, highlighting the effectiveness of their all-weather strategy in partnership with bottling companies. I wasn’t expecting to get caught up in Fonterra so soon, but the price action today just grabbed my attention. The Fonterra Shareholders’ Fund had a good day with a 7% rally when news of the global consumer business exit emerged, which shouldn’t be too surprising given the long-running concerns about the return on capital for the high-value consumer businesses. But what caught my eye today was just how much the cooperative shares jumped today in trading among the farmer shareholders – up 15% or so in late afternoon trading. Jarden’s analyst note speculating on a $2-per-share capital return from a successful sale probably did them some favours, given the co-op shares started the trading day at about $2.52 a share. The gap between the cooperative shares and the fund units has been pretty stark since Fonterra tied up the fund rather than give it the dignified death it probably needed and the capital restructuring sapped the need for farmers to be fully-shared up to supply the co-op. I reckon that narrowing of the price gap on hefty volumes for the co-op gives a pretty clear steer on where its owners see the value accruing. Heineken Equity Method Investment Impairment: US GAAP vs. IFRS Heineken has reported a $949M impairment charge for its equity-method investment in CR Beer. As Heineken reports under IFRS, it's important to understand the key differences between US GAAP and IFRS regarding equity-method investment impairment. 1. IMPAIRMENT MEASUREMENT: > US GAAP: Investment is written down to fair value. > IFRS: Investment is written down to the greater of: (a) Fair value less costs to sell, or (b) Value in use (the present value of future cash flows expected from the investment). 2. IMPAIRMENT ALLOCATION: > US GAAP: Impairment loss is allocated to the investor’s proportionate share of the underlying assets, tracked in “memo accounts.” > IFRS: Prohibits allocation of impairment down to the proportionate share of assets. If US GAAP and IFRS entities have identical equity method investments, the reported share of earnings from the investee could differ after an impairment. For instance, if the US GAAP entity attributes the impairment to Property, Plant, and Equipment (PP&E), it would result in lower depreciation expenses compared to the IFRS entity when measuring its equity method earnings. 3.
